What is incident summary?

The incident summary feature, powered by Atlassian Intelligence, uses both Atlassian’s machine learning and generative AI to keep incident responders up-to-date with the latest developments in an incident when they join the ongoing discussion in a Slack channel. By providing a concise summary of the most recent and relevant updates, this feature helps responders quickly get up to speed without needing to sift through an extensive chat history.

The quality, accuracy, and reliability of information generated by Atlassian Intelligence may vary. Learn why

Incident summary in Slack is a key AIOps feature that can offer various benefits, it streamlines the incident response process by:

  • Quickly bringing new responders up to speed with the most critical updates, minimizing delays in their contributions to the incident resolution.

  • Allowing the team to stay focused on resolving the incident, rather than spending valuable time manually piecing together the incident's progress.

  • Summarizing key actions and decisions made during the incident ensures that everyone is aligned and aware of the incident’s current state.

Summarizing the incident not only helps in managing the ongoing incident but also provides a valuable record that can be reviewed after the incident is resolved. This review process can help teams understand what worked well, what didn’t, and how future incidents might be better managed or even prevented.

You need to give additional permission for this feature to access and use your channel data.

  • For an already connected Slace workspace: Select the lock button next to the workspace name to give permission.

  • For a new Slack workspace: Follow the usual steps, which also include granting permission for this feature to use your channel data.

Summarize an incident in Slack

  1. When you, as a new responder, join a Slack channel associated with an ongoing incident, you’ll receive an automatic prompt asking if you’d like to see a summary of the progress so far.

  2. You can also manually invoke a summary by typing the specific command  /jsmops summarize incident in the channel.

  3. The summary contains information sourced from a combination of chat history and incident data, powered by Atlassian Intelligence, which is displayed in the channel for your review. It may vary depending on your permissions in Jira Service Management.

  4. The summary includes some key developments, such as:

    1. Affected services

    2. Incident responders

    3. Important links such as the incident in JSM and the Zoom war room

    4. Relevant and crucial actions along with changes and decisions made by the incident responders

Add updates to the summary

The incident summary is dynamically generated and gets updated automatically as the incident progresses. Key actions, changes, and decisions made in the channel are included in the summary, allowing it to remain a real-time reflection of the incident's current state.
