Create daily, weekly, and custom rotations

This article highlights a new alerting feature that's natively available in Jira Service Management which is gradually rolling out to some Jira Service Management Cloud customers. It may not yet be visible or available on your site.

Rotations are groups of people who take turns being on-call for a specific shift. In Jira Service Management, you can create schedules with multiple rotations, each with its own time period and participants. This allows you to customize your on-call schedule based on your organization's needs.

Let's explore how to create a schedule with different types of rotations.

Create an on-call schedule with daily rotation

  1. Go to the detail of the schedule where you want to create a daily rotation.

  2. Select Add rotation.

  3. Enter a name to the rotation and add participants.

  4. Under Timings, select a Shift duration. The shift duration defines the end and start times of each shift. You can select one of the default durations or you can create your own duration by selecting Create custom duration. Keep in mind that the start of the day is considered as 12:00 am, but the start of your business day might be different in your company. Adjust the timings accordingly.

  5. Set the shift frequency as Daily.

  6. Select "Save" to create the daily rotation. Now, all shifts will rotate daily within your selected shift duration.

Create an on-call schedule with weekly rotation

  1. Go to the detail of the schedule where you want to create a daily rotation.

  2. Select Add rotation.

  3. Enter a name to the rotation and add participants.

  4. Under Timings, select a Shift duration. One of the default weekly rotations is Monday to Friday 8am - 5pm. You can either select this option, or you can create a custom duration by selecting Create custom duration. The shift duration defines the end and start date of each shift. Keep in mind that the start of the day is considered as 12:00 am, but the start of the business day is 08:00 am. Adjust the timings accordingly.

  5. Set the rotation type as Weekly.

  6. Select Save to create the daily rotation. Now, your shifts will be available on weekdays, on business hours, rotating daily.

Create an on-call schedule with custom rotation

  1. Once more, navigate to the schedule's detail and select Add rotation.

  2. Enter a name and select the participants for this rotation

  3. For a custom rotation, you need to define the business hours for each day.

  4. Specify the business hours for each day individually, such as Monday 09:00 AM to Monday 06:00 PM. You can add additional hours by selecting Add time slot and entering the respective time intervals.

  5. If your business hours span multiple days, such as Monday 09:00 to Friday 18:00, include the evening hours from Monday to Thursday.

  6. Select Save to create the custom rotation.
