Create incident timeline in Slack

Atlassian Intelligence is available and automatically activated for all products on Premium and Enterprise plans. Organization admins can manage Atlassian Intelligence preferences from Settings > Atlassian Intelligence in Atlassian Administration.

This Atlassian Intelligence feature is in beta. For details on how to sign up, read our community post.

Powered by Atlassian Intelligence, the incident timeline feature leverages both machine learning and generative AI to generate a comprehensive timeline of an incident, seamlessly integrating key chat messages from Slack channels and updates from Jira Service Management. It provides a chronological record of all critical actions and decisions made during an incident, helping your teams trace back the steps taken and understand the flow of events that led to the resolution of the incident.

The quality, accuracy, and reliability of information generated by Atlassian Intelligence may vary. Learn why

The incident timeline in Slack is a key AIOps feature that can offer various benefits and is essential for:

  • Automatically generating timelines that capture the significant moments of an incident, to help ensure that nothing is missed.

  • Using the timeline to review the incident in detail after resolution. This will help you understand what went well and what could be improved for future incidents, making the post-incident review process easier.

  • Sharing a consistent and comprehensive record of the incident to help ensure that all team members are on the same page.

You need to give additional permission for this feature to access and use your channel data.

  • For an already connected Slace workspace: Select the lock button next to the workspace name to give permission.

  • For a new Slack workspace: Follow the usual steps, which also include granting permission for this feature to use your channel data.

Create an incident timeline in Slack

  1. Once an incident is resolved, you, as the assignee will receive a direct message from the Jira Service Management ChatOps app asking if you would like to create an incident timeline.

  2. You can also manually create the timeline by typing the specific command /jsmops create timeline in the relevant channel.

  3. A modal will open, allowing you to select specific entries to include in the timeline. These entries are selected from the key messages and updates identified during the incident.

  4. After selecting the relevant entries, select the Send to incident button to post the timeline to the connected incident in Jira Service Management. The entries will also be shared in the Slack channel as a message visible to all members, providing an easy way to review critical events and actions.

  5. You’ll be informed if a timeline was previously posted to the incident so that there aren’t any duplicate entries.
