Add a conditional field to a service project

In addition to the pre-configured fields (e.g. Assignee, Reporter, Request type, and more) in a request type, you can also add custom fields. One of these custom field types is Cascading fields. You can use these to create conditional fields with two lists: a parent list of values and a child list of values dependent on what is selected in the parent list.

You need to be a Jira administrator to create and configure a cascading field.

Create a cascading field

  1. Go to Settings () > Issues.

  2. From the navigation on the left, select Custom fields.

  3. Select Create custom field in the top-right corner.

  4. Choose Select List (cascading), and then select Next.

  5. Name your field, and add a description if desired.

  6. Select Create. You’ll be taken to the Screens page.

  7. Check the box next to <yourprojectkey> Jira Service Management Screen, and any other screens where you want this field to appear. Learn more about screens.

  8. Select Update at the bottom of the page.

Configure your cascading field

  1. On the Custom fields page, find your newly created cascading field.

  2. Select the More actions (•••) menu, and then select Contexts and default value in the dropdown.

  3. Under "Default Configuration Scheme" for your field, select Edit options.

  4. With the parent list selected by default, enter a name for the parent list in the Add value field.

  5. After your parent lists have been created, you can switch between parent lists under "Choose parent list to edit" to add unique values for each child list.

Add your new cascading fields to a portal request form

  1. From your service project, select Project settings, then Request management, then Request types.

  2. Find and select the request type you want to add the cascading field to.

  3. Select Request form.

  4. Drag and drop the new field (or fields) from the right hand panel into your request form.

  5. To see your request form, select Preview form in portal in the top right.

  6. Select Save changes.
