Manage service relationships
Who this is for: anyone with edit permission on a service schema in Assets who is setting up or maintaining services for their team. If you're new to services, start with What are services?
This article describes the new Services experience in Jira Service Management, which uses Assets schemas as the underlying data model.
Free plan: services aren't available on the Free plan after 31 July 2026. Upgrade to a Standard, Premium, or Enterprise plan to keep using services.
A relationship connects a service to the other services and objects it depends on, so you can see and manage those dependencies in one place. You manage relationships through a service's reference attributes. Each service comes with two ready-made ones, and you can add your own to reference objects in other schemas.
Add or remove a relationship
Go to Operations > Services and select the service you want to manage. A glance panel opens on the right.
In the first box of the panel, select the option to show more attributes.
Find the two built-in reference attributes, one for the Software Registry schema and one for the Business Portfolio schema.
To add a relationship, select an object from the dropdown. To remove one, select the cross next to the object.
Each reference attribute can hold up to 1000 objects.
Reference objects in other schemas
The two built-in attributes cover Software Registry and Business Portfolio. To reference objects in any other schema, add your own reference attribute:
In the service's attributes, create a new custom attribute.
Set Type to Object.
Set Type value to the schema you want to reference.
You then add and remove relationships on your custom attribute exactly as you do on the built-in ones.
