Hardware asset management glossary

Hardware asset management is available with Jira Service Management Premium and Enterprise.

To set it up, you must be a Jira admin and an Assets admin.

These are the key terms used across hardware asset management.

Term

Definition

Hardware

An individual physical device you track as an asset, such as a laptop, monitor, or server.

Hardware model

A make and configuration that many hardware assets share, such as a specific laptop model.

Model catalogue

The list of approved models your team procures and assigns.

Stockroom

A location where you store and manage hardware before it's assigned or deployed.

Stock rule

A rule that sets minimum and maximum stock levels for a model in a stockroom, to trigger replenishment.

Status

The lifecycle state of a hardware asset, such as In stock, In use, or Retired.

Depreciation

How the value of a hardware asset decreases over its useful life.

Hardware work

Any tracked activity on a hardware asset — such as procuring, shipping, repairing, auditing, or disposing of a device. Hardware work can be started by a request type, a schedule, an event, or a bulk action, and is tracked as work items and progressed by automations.

Work item

A single tracked task or request about hardware, such as procuring, repairing, or disposing of a device. Work items move through a workflow (for example, To do, In progress, Done).

Request type

A ready-made request form for a common hardware task, such as Request new hardware. Submitting a request type creates a work item.

Automation

A rule that performs actions automatically, such as creating a work item when a request is submitted, or updating an asset's status when work is completed.

Automation template

A ready-made automation that ships with hardware asset management, which you can enable to handle a common hardware process — for example, tracking procurement work items or triggering stock replenishment.

Overview

The dashboard that summarizes your hardware in charts.

Custom dashboard

A saved, tailored view of your hardware built from charts and filters, shared with your team.

Assets common data model

The shared schema in Assets that hardware asset management stores its data in.
