Automatically archive a Slack channel

Incident channels can accumulate over time, making it harder to manage your Slack workspace.
Automatic archiving helps you:

  • Keep your Slack environment organized

  • Remove channels that are no longer active

  • Reduce manual cleanup tasks

  • Ensure only relevant incidents channels remain visible

Operations admins and Jira admin can choose to automatically archive inactive incident Slack channels after a set number of days. When enabled, the system tracks channel activity for each incident Slack channel. If no messages are posted for the specified number of days, and the related incident status is closed or resolved, the channel will be automatically archived.

This feature is only available for incident channels created through the Jira Service Management ChatOps app.

Configure automatic archiving

To enable this feature, you must first turn on the toggle Automatically archive incident channels. Only Jira admins can manage this feature.

  1. In your service space, go to Space settings > Incident management

  2. Under Communication preferences, view Slack > Channel settings.

  3. Enter the number of days of inactivity in the Archive after field to determine after which the channel should be archived

Once set, the feature will automatically archive channels that meet these conditions.

If a channel is linked to multiple incidents, it will not be archived, even if inactive.
