Get Jira notifications in Slack

The Jira Cloud for Slack app can send Jira notifications directly in Slack, either as direct messages or as updates in a channel. You can configure which events trigger notifications, filter by space or priority, and take action on work items directly from the notification card.

Receive personal notifications in Slack

Personal notifications appear as direct messages from @Jira in Slack. You can control exactly what triggers a notification, so you only hear about what's relevant to you. Personal notifications are on by default once you connect your account.

Set up personal notifications

Here’s how to set up, or update, your personal Jira notifications in Slack:

1. Open a DM with @Jira in Slack (or any channel the Jira bot is in).

2. Type /jira notify.

3. Choose your notification triggers: Essentials (recommended) or All.

4. Add optional filters: by space, work type, or priority.

Turn off email notifications

Once you've set up personal notifications in Slack, you might want to disable email notifications so that you’re not receiving duplicate messages.

1. Select Settings (), then select Notification settings.

2. Use the toggle next to Send me emails for work item activity to disable email notifications.

View a personal notification in Slack

Each notification card shows you the work item title, current status, priority, assignee, and a summary of what changed. You can act on it directly - you don’t need to go to Jira.

Receive channel notifications in Slack

Subscribe a Slack channel to a Jira space so the whole team gets notified about relevant work items. There are a few different ways to connect your Jira space to the right Slack channel.

1. Go to the Slack channel you want to receive updates in.

2. Type /jira connect.

3. Select your Jira site and space.

4. Set your notification filters (work item type, priority, event type).

You can also set up Slack notifications from inside Jira.

3. Under Connect to Slack, select Get started, then connect a Slack channel. Space admins can configure notification filters, choose between a basic or extended format, and use JQL-based advanced filtering.

Manage your channel subscriptions

To see and manage all subscriptions in a channel, type /jira manage. From here, you can update filters, pause notifications, or disconnect a space.

Take action from a channel notification

Every notification card has contextual actions built in. Depending on the type of update, you'll see options to:

• Add a comment directly to the Jira work item.

• Transition the work item’s status (for example, from In Progress to Done).

• Assign the work item to yourself or someone else.

• Start or stop watching to control future notifications.
