We’re updating our terminology in Jira

The term ‘project’ will soon be replaced with 'space'. You may notice some inconsistencies while we make this change.

Edit a space's details

As an admin, you can edit your space's:

  • Name — appears when people in your Jira site search, browse directories, or use the space switcher

  • Space key — typically the shorthand version of the space's name

  • URL

  • Category — helps larger organizations label and filter similar spaces in directories

  • Avatar — helps teams across your Jira site visually identify your space

  • Space owner — usually the space’s administrator

  • Default assignee — a role to which all work items created in the space are assigned

  • Space background

  • Card covers

To edit a space's details:

  1. Open the space you want to change.

  2. From your space's sidebar, select Space settings, then Details.

  3. Edit the relevant details and select Save details.

If you change the name of your space, the new name will automatically update in any filters on your Jira site.

Change a space's key

Only organization, site, and Jira admins can edit a space key.

Space keys provide a shorthand for the work items in your space. Together with a work item’s sequential number, they form a unique identifier called a work item key. More about work item keys

To change your space key:

  1. Next to your space’s name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. In the Space key field, enter your desired space key. It must:

Things to consider before changing a space key

  • You won't be able to create a new space with the old space key. The old space key will only be available if you delete the space it was previously associated with.

  • Links containing the old space key will continue to work, since link aliases won’t be updated with the new key.

    • For example, if you have a link to a work item EXAMPLE-1 in the description of a work item, and you change the space key EXAMPLE to DEMO, then the alias EXAMPLE-1 won't be updated to DEMO-1. The link will still direct you to DEMO-1.

  • After you change a key, we recommend communicating the change to your users. You’ll need to update board filters, dashboard filter gadgets, and any other global queries with the new key.

Delete a previous space key

Only organization, site, and Jira admins can delete a space key.

Whenever you change your space key, we automatically save your previous space keys. This ensures that any links, filters, and queries using your previous key continue working.

In some cases, you may need to delete a previous space key from its associated space so you can use it for a new space. Deleting a previous space key can impact anything that is still using that space key, including:

  • links

We recommend letting users know before you delete your previous space key so that they can update any links, filters, or queries using the previous space key.

To delete a previous space key:

  1. Next to your space’s name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. In the Previous space keys field, delete the relevant space key.

Space URLs are only available in company-managed spaces.

You can link team members and viewers to an external site by adding a space URL. The space URL displays in the Spaces directory of your site.

Most teams supply an address to documentation about the space, roadmaps, or other important content outside of their Jira site. If you use Confluence to collaborate, we recommend adding a link to your team's space.

To change your space's URL:

  1. Next to your space’s name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

Administrators can view the description in the Summary section of your space's settings.

To add or edit your space's description:

  1. Next to your space’s name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. In the Description field, enter a summary of important details about the space.

Edit a space's category

Your Jira admin may add space categories to help manage spaces across your Jira site.

If you’re using a company-managed space, contact a Jira admin to assign your space to one of those categories.

If you’re using a team-managed space, here’s how to assign or change your space's category:

  1. Next to your space's name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. Under Category, use the dropdown to assign your space a category.

Change the type of space

You can't directly change from a software space to a business space, and vice versa, but you can create a new space and move all of the work items into it.

For example, you can create a software space and move all of the work items over from a business space to get finer control over your space's workflow, board settings, and more.

The difference between a software and business space is in the way your users work in the space.

Change your space's avatar

Avatars help give a face to your space's name. They appear in the space sidebar and in your site's list of space.

To change your space's avatar:

  1. Next to the relevant space in your sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. Under your space’s current avatar, select Change icon.

  4. Choose from a default icon or upload your own, then use Select to save your choice.

Change the space owner

A space owner is usually the space administrator, who controls and manages a space's settings.

You may want to change the space owner as people move in and out of your team.

To change the space owner:

  1. Next to the relevant space in your sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. In the Space owner field, select the person who’ll own the space.

Add or change your space's default assignee

When work items are created in your space, you can set a default assignee. This is useful for open spaces where everyone on the site can report tasks to your space.

The default assignee is typically a team member who prioritizes or validates that reported work items are meant for their team and distributes these tasks to their team members accordingly. By default, they receive a notification when someone creates a work item in the space.

To change your space's default assignee:

  1. Next to the relevant space in your sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. In the Default assignee field, select the relevant person.

Note that the default assignee can only be either Unassigned, or the Space owner. If you want a specific person to be the default assignee, you'll need to change the Space owner (described above).
