Create work items on the timeline

This page is for software projects

To check whether you’re in a software or business project, select More actions (•••) next to the project name in either the header or the sidebar. At the bottom of the menu that opens, your project details will be shown.

You must have the following to do the things described on this page.

Permission: Create work items

The timeline view uses your project’s board as its work item source. As you create work items in your project, they're automatically added to your timeline. You can also make new work items directly on your timeline view.

Create a parent work item

  1. In software projects, select Create Epic at the bottom of the work items column. In business projects, select Create.

  2. Give your work item a name.

  3. Select the work type you’d like to create from the dropdown (if your project has more than one work type). All work types associated with your project will be included, except those that require a parent.

  4. Press return (Mac) or Enter (Windows) on your keyboard to finalize.

The default parent work type in Jira is Epic, which is what we use in this documentation. However, this is a dynamic value based on how your administrator configures the parent work item type. For example, if your project uses feature as the parent work type, you’ll see Create Feature.

Insert a work item on the timeline

If you want to place a work item directly between two existing work items on your timeline, hover on the line between them and select the blue + that appears:

Jira Software Cloud のロードマップにある既存の 2 つの課題の間に課題を挿入する

Manage child work items on the timeline

A work item can have child work items that can be assigned and tracked individually. If you have a task with a related subtask, that task would be considered a parent work item while the subtask would be a child work item.

Create a child work item

To create a child work item from the timeline view:

  1. Hover over the parent work item and select + to create a child work item.

  2. Enter a summary of what needs to be done.

  3. Press return (Mac) or Enter (Windows) on your keyboard to finalize.

Change the parent of a child work item

From the timeline, you can change the parent of a child work item by dragging and dropping it underneath a new parent.

Another way to change the parent is to open the child work item, then select the work type icon in the top-left corner next to the work item key of the parent.
