We’re updating our terminology in Jira

The term ‘project’ will soon be replaced with 'space'. You may notice some inconsistencies while we make this change.

Create and edit team-managed spaces

This page is for team-managed spaces

To check whether your space is team-managed or company-managed, select More actions (•••) next to the space name in either the header or the sidebar. At the bottom of the menu that opens, your space details will be shown.

If you're in a company-managed space, check out these company-managed space articles instead.

More about the difference between company-managed and team-managed space.

By default, anyone can create team-managed spaces. Out of the box, a software space gives end users the Create team-managed spaces global permission. Jira admins can prevent users from creating team-managed spaces by managing which groups are granted this permission. Read more about global permissions

To find out if you can create your own space, choose Spaces in the navigation bar. If you see the Create space option, then you're all set. If not, check with your Jira admin for help creating a space.

Create a team-managed software space

To create a new, team-managed software space:

  1. Next to Spaces in the sidebar, select Create space ().

  2. Select a space template, then select Use template.

  3. Choose Select a team-managed space.

  4. Enter a name for your space (a space key is generated for you, you can change it if you like) and select Next.

Depending on the tools connected to your site, you can also connect existing code repositories, security containers, and Confluence spaces to your new space.

Space names are unique in Jira. They are always visible to Jira administrators and anyone with the Administer Jira global permission. Avoid using confidential or sensitive terms in your space's name. If you need to label a space with confidential or sensitive information, we recommend using a codename, instead.

Edit your team-managed software space's details

In team-managed spaces, you can edit the following space details:

  • Icon — which helps teams across your Jira site visually identify your space

  • Name — which appears when people in your Jira site search, browse directories, or use the space switcher

  • Key — which is typically the shorthand version of the space's name

  • Category — which helps larger organizations label and filter similar spaces in directories

  • Space owner — who is usually the space admin for your team-managed space

  • Default assignee — which is a role to which all work items created in the space are assigned to

To change these details: From your space's sidebar, select Space settings, then Details.

Change your team-managed software space's icon

Space icons help give a face to your spacet's name. They appear in the space sidebar and in your site's list of all spaces.

To change your space's icon:

  1. Next to the name of your space in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

Change the space key of a team-managed software or service space

Space keys provide a shorthand for the work items in a space. Together with a sequential number, they form a unique identifier called an “work item key”. This ID is the foundation of how work is tracked and referred to in Jira.

You’ll find a work item key:

  • on work items themselves, as a label

  • in the work item’s URL

  • ... anywhere you need to reference the work you're tracking!

If you have space permissions, this is how to change the space's key:

  1. From your space's sidebar, select Space settings, then Details.

  2. In the Key field, enter your desired key. Your space's key must:

    • 2 文字以上

    • 大文字で始まる

    • 大文字と数字のみを含める

  3. [詳細を保存] を選択します。

  4. 変更が正しく適用されたことを確認します。更新されたキーがボードに表示されるまでに最大 10 分かかることがありますので、事前に変更点をチームに伝えてください。

You have the option to delete the old key from Previous keys, however, this restricts access to the work items that refer to that old key. If you struggle to open a work item with a changed space key, change the space key back to its old name and try again.

Assign or change your team-managed space's category

Space categories help group similar software, service, and business spaces across your Jira site. They can be used in advanced search, filters, reports, and more. Your Jira admin creates and manages the categories that are available. Read about adding and deleting space categories

To assign or change your space's category:

  1. Next to the name of your space in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. Under Category, use the dropdown to assign your space a category.

Change your team-managed space owner

The space owner in a team-managed space is usually the space admin, who controls and manages a space's settings.

You may want to change the space owner as people move in and out of your team in a longer-term project.

To change your space's owner:

  1. Next to the name of your space in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  3. In the Space owner field, set a new person to lead the project.

Add or change your team-managed space's default assignee

When work items are created in your space, you can set a default assignee. This is useful for open spaces where everyone on the site can report tasks to your space.

The default assignee is typically a team member who prioritizes or validates that reported work items are meant for their team and distributes these tasks to their team members accordingly. By default, they receive a notification when someone creates a work item in the space.

If you’re not able to change the default assignee, then check if you’ve enabled Allow unassigned work item under system Jira’s general configuration.
