A custom filter is a saved and reusable search term that helps you find issues in team-managed projects. Custom filters are defined by queries, which are written using JQL (Jira Query Language). These filters are only applicable to the board and backlog, and are limited to a single project.

If you’re a project admin, you can manage custom filters by going to your board or backlog, then selecting > Manage custom filters. You can also access this page by going to Project settings > Board > Custom filters.

Create a custom filter

To create a custom filter in team-managed projects:

  1. From your board or backlog, select > Manage custom filters.

  2. Select Create custom filter.

  3. Enter a name and description for your filter.

  4. Enter a filter query using JQL (Jira Query Language) to tell Jira what issues you’re looking for. As you type, Jira will validate your query and offer a list of autocomplete suggestions based on your query’s context.

  5. Once your query is validated, select Create.

Edit a custom filter

To edit a custom filter in team-managed projects:

  1. From your board or backlog, select > Manage custom filters.

  2. Find the filter you’d like to edit and select > Edit.

  3. From here, you can edit the name, description, and query for your custom filter.

  4. To save your changes, select Update.

Delete a custom filter

To delete a custom filter in team-managed projects:

  1. From your board or backlog, select > Manage custom filters.

  2. Find the filter you’d like to delete and select > Delete.

  3. Select Delete in the confirmation modal to finalize your action.

Note that deleting a custom filter won’t remove any issues from your project.
