Enable capacity planning in your plan

This page refers to the advanced planning features that are only available as part of Jira Cloud Premium and Enterprise.

Before you can use capacity planning

Capacity planning requires that you use boards as a team’s issue source. This feature doesn’t work if you use projects or filters as issue sources.

What is capacity planning?

On your board

  • Ensure that sprints are enabled in team-managed projects. In company-managed projects, sprints are enabled by default, but they can be turned off in team-managed projects. Read how to enable sprints in team-managed projects.

  • Estimate issues using either story points or hours/days.

  • We recommend that you create sprints on the boards for scrum teams. If you create one, your plan can infer future sprints based on the length and defined end dates. These sprints show as Projected sprints. See what other sprint states are in your plan.

In your plan

Once these criteria have been met, you can view teams' capacity in your plan.

Show capacity on your timeline

  1. Navigate the View settings menu and group your issues by Team or Sprint.

  2. Select the checkbox next to Show capacity on timeline.

Show capacity on your Program board

Capacity information is enabled by default on the Program board, provided you’ve added your sprints as part of your board’s configuration. See the steps to add sprints to your Program board.
