Link issue to a parent in your plan

This page refers to the advanced planning features that are only available as part of Jira Cloud Premium and Enterprise.

There are two ways to update a parent-child relationship between issues in your plan:

  • Drag and drop a child into its parent issue in the Scope section of your plan, or

  • Select multiple issues, then navigate to Bulk actions > Parent.

You can also define and adjust this relationship using the Parent Link field on the issue in Jira, assuming that you have it enabled on your site. If you don’t have this field in your issues, you’ll need to add it. See how to enable custom fields in Jira issues

You can only link an issue to a parent of the corresponding hierarchy level as configured in your plan. For instance, if you made a level called initiative which lives above epic, you can’t link a story to the initiative. You must first add the story to an epic, then that epic to an initiative.

You can also parent an epic from a team managed project with an initiative from a company-managed project.
