Set up Docs in Jira

We're currently updating the Pages experience and renaming it to “Docs”. There might be a temporary difference between the information below and what you see in Jira.

The Docs feature helps your team keep track of your documentation in Confluence Cloud. Connect Confluence to your Jira space to give your team direct access to your project documentation, without having to go to Confluence.

Confluence spaces are like Jira spaces. They're used by your team to store information. But while Jira spaces store work items, Confluence spaces store pages, whiteboards, and other types of content.

Add the Docs tab

Only space admins can add new tabs via the space navigation.

To add the Docs tab to your Jira space:

  1. In the space navigation, select Add to navigation (+).

  2. Select Docs.

A new menu item, Docs, will be added to the horizontal menu.

Create a new Confluence space for your team

When you sign up to Confluence via Docs, you will have to select a Confluence space to join or create a new one. If you want to create a new one via Jira, you’ll need to:

  1. Navigate to your Jira space.

  2. In the space navigation, select Docs.

  3. Select Create a new Confluence space.

  4. Enter a name for the new space, then select Create space to create a new Confluence space that will be automatically connected to Jira.

Connect your team's existing Confluence content to your Jira space

To connect an existing Confluence space, folder, or page from Docs in Jira, you’ll need to:

  1. Navigate to your Jira space.

  2. In the space navigation, select Docs.

  3. Select Link existing Confluence spaces or content.

  4. Select a Confluence space, folder, or page, or search to find one.

  5. Select Connect and your Confluence content will be connected to your Jira space.

Connect to different Confluence content

Jira spaces can only be connected to one Confluence space, folder, or page at a time. When you connect a Confluence space, folder, or page, all its child pages will be visible in Jira. If a page is restricted in Confluence, the same permission settings apply in Jira.

To change which Confluence content is connected to your Jira space:

  1. Navigate to your Jira space.

  2. In the space navigation, select Docs.

  3. Select Manage connection.

  4. Select an existing Confluence space, folder, or page or search to find one. You can also create a new one and connect to it by selecting Create new space.

  5. Select Connect and your selected Confluence space, folder or page will be connected to your Jira space.

How users get access to Confluence via Docs

Once you have Docs set up, Jira users will be able to see the Docs tab in the space navigation. If a user selects Docs and they don’t have access to the connected Confluence space, they’ll see a prompt to try out Confluence or learn more about how it works.

If the user is on an approved domain, they can select the “Join Confluence” button to start using Docs right away. Users that join Confluence this way will get default app access.

If the user isn’t on an approved domain, they’ll have to request access. They won’t be able to use Docs or Confluence until they’re approved by a site admin.

If a page is restricted in Confluence, the same permission settings apply to Docs in Jira.
