Integrate Jira Cloud and Slack

The Jira Cloud for Slack app brings your Jira work into Slack, so you can create work items, get notifications, and take action without ever leaving your conversations. Whether you're triaging a bug in a thread, assigning a ticket to a teammate, or just checking the status of a work item, it's all available right from Slack.

To get started, install the Jira Cloud for Slack app.

You can use the Jira app for Slack to create, update, and assign Jira work items using natural language, directly from any Slack channel or DM.

Before you begin

  • The Jira Cloud for Slack app must be installed on your Slack workspace. You can install it from the Slack App Directory.

  • After installing, you'll be guided to log in to your Atlassian account to link Slack and Jira. This takes about a minute.

  • Once connected, you'll get a direct message from the Jira Cloud app in Slack.

  • If you want Jira to work in a private channel, you must first invite @Jira to that channel.

  • If your organization has multiple Jira Cloud sites, you'll be asked to select a site when connecting spaces or setting up notifications.

Your Jira site administrator must enable the Slack integration at https://<your-instance>.atlassian.net/plugins/servlet/ac/jira-slack-integration/addon-config-page before anyone can connect. If you see a message like "Connecting with this Jira Cloud instance was disabled by administrator", ask your admin to enable it first.

Slack workspaces are given a “Needs review” status until they're approved by a site admin. You can still configure and use Jira from Slack until the site admin approves the relevant workspace.

Security controls

Jira permissions are respected

The app respects existing Jira permissions at both the work item and administration levels. You'll only ever see and interact with work items you have permission to access in Jira.

Work item-level security

If your Jira site uses work-item-level security schemes, Slack notifications will not be sent for work items with security restrictions applied. Read more about work item security schemes
