What is the new navigation in Jira?

This page is for the new navigation, which we’re currently rolling out. If you don’t have the new navigation yet, sign up for the new navigation or read documentation for the old navigation.

The new navigation is centred around customization capabilities and ease-of-use improvements. With a design familiar to anyone who uses software products, we’re creating a new navigation that’ll eventually fit all Atlassian products.

Jira's new navigation
  1. See the brand/product identity and switch Atlassian sites or apps

  2. Access items like Your work, Recent, Starred, and Apps across projects and products

  3. Explore Projects

  4. Access and manage Filters and Dashboards

  5. Customize the sidebar

  6. Search across all products on your site, and create issues

  7. Access AI chat and utility items like notifications, settings, and profile

Key features

Jira's new navigation with projects

Work across multiple projects and boards straight from the sidebar.

  • Your work: Find things you’ve interacted with and resume work.

  • Recent: Any time you visit, edit, or create projects, issues, boards, filters, and dashboards, they’ll show up here.

  • Starred: Surface your most important items by marking them with a star.

Customize your sidebar

Customize Jira's sidebar

Show, reorder, or hide navigation items in the sidebar to keep the focus on what’s important to you. Change these at any time by going to More () > Customize sidebar.

  1. Customize your sidebar

  2. Drag the line to customize

  3. Drag the item to show, reorder, or hide

    1. Show items: To add items to your sidebar, simply drag them above the Hide from sidebar line.

    2. Hide items: To remove items from your sidebar, drag them below the Hide from sidebar line. Alternatively, drag the Hide from sidebar line above the items you want to hide.

    3. Reorder items: To rearrange the order of items in your sidebar, drag them to your preferred positions.

Use (up and down arrow keys) from your keyboard to reorder items in your sidebar.

Show or hide the sidebar

Jira's collapse and expand

If the sidebar takes up too much space, you can either resize or collapse it. You’ll always be able to expand the sidebar when you need to navigate again.

Tip: Press ] to expand and [ to collapse the sidebar.

Horizontal project navigation

Jira's horizontal tab navigation in projects

As an admin, you can reorder and remove project tabs. Customize your project’s tab to work more contextually in your project, and your users will be able to seamlessly switch between views.

To access project settings, go to the project and you can either:

  • Select More () from the sidebar

  • Select More () from the project header

Only admins can reorder reorder and remove tabs.

Quick access to filters and dashboards

Jira's new navigation showing filters and dashboards

Easily access filters and dashboards from anywhere in Jira.

  • Starred filters and dashboards: Mark your frequently used filters and dashboards with a star to bring them to the top.

  • Recent filters and dashboards: Once you visit, edit, or create filters and dashboards they’ll show up under Recent.

Apps

Apps in Jira's new navigation

Access Apps from the sidebar. Select (more actions) for Apps to explore more apps, manage apps, and view app requests.

Frequently asked questions

Question

Answer/Response

Why don’t I have the new navigation?

We’re cautiously rolling out the new navigation for General Availability (GA) in waves from March 2025 onwards.

We’ll notify you and your admins when the new navigation is enabled for your site a few weeks prior.

How can I turn the new navigation on or off?

To turn the new navigation on or off:

  1. From the top right corner, select Settings > General settings.

  2. Under Jira Labs, you can toggle the switch for New navigation.

  3. Refresh the page.

Note: Turning the new navigation or off will only affect you and not all users on the site.

Why can’t I see the Jira Labs under Settings for my site?

We have disabled the option to opt-out for the below cohort:

  • Sites on the Free edition

  • Sandbox sites

  • New users who’ve never used the old navigation in their sites before
