Use a configuration file for project imports

When importing multiple projects using CSV files, a configuration file can help you save your preferences such as project settings, Jira fields, and user information. If any upcoming project imports have the same preferences, uploading a configuration file as part of the import can help you import projects faster and consistently move the same fields and users across multiple projects.

You can upload a configuration file along with your CSV file to bring in the following saved preferences from a previous import:

  • Project details such as Jira project type, template type, and team-managed/company-managed project selection

  • Specific CSV columns mapped to Jira fields present in the configuration file

  • Specific user information present in the configuration file

This feature has been introduced in the new Jira import experience. The configuration file feature is also available in the old import experience.

Download a configuration file

To download a configuration file you must complete a project import.

  1. You can download a configuration file at the end of a CSV file import in the Review details screen.

  2. Select Download a configuration file and a JSON file with a .txt extension will be saved on your device.

Review project details screen with the Download a configuration file option highlighted.

This file will contain all the selections you made during the import and can be used to bring in the same preferences in your next import.

Upload a configuration file

During a CSV file import, make sure to also upload a configuration file to bring in preferences from a previous import.

This feature is available in the new import experience. We recommend that you only upload the configuration file that you download from the new import experience in Jira to avoid errors.

To use a configuration file during an import:

  1. From the navigation bar, select Projects > Create project > Import data. Or, Settings () > System > External System Import.

  2. Select the app from which you’d like to import your data from. If you can’t find your app in the list, select CSV to use any CSV file to import your data.

    • If you select Asana, ClickUp, monday, or Trello, you can directly import data without a CSV file. Read about directly importing data from Asana, ClickUp, monday, or Trello into Jira.

    • In the Upload a CSV file screen, select Upload a configuration file (optional) and upload the configuration file you downloaded from a previous import.

  3. Select Next and continue with the import.

Upload a CSV file screen with a CSV file and a configuration file uploaded

The configuration file you upload will be prioritized over the CSV file in a project import. We recommend that you upload the right configuration file and not make any changes to the downloaded file.

The configuration file will prefill any data that is also available in the CSV file based on the preferences in your previous import. You will need to fill in any other remaining information that you’d like to import. The following information will be automatically prefilled based on the information in your configuration file:

  • In the Set up a project in Jira screen:

    • Jira project

    • Template

    • Project type

  • In the Map project fields screen, the columns from the CSV file will be mapped to Jira fields based on your preferences in the configuration file.

  • In the Move users to Jira screen, user information provided in the configuration file will be mapped to the users in the CSV file.

If there is information that is available in the configuration file but not available in the CSV file, you will be informed in the Map project fields and Move users to Jira screens. You can either move ahead without importing this information or go back to upload another configuration file and restart the import.
