We're updating our terminology in Jira

'Issue' is changing to 'work item'. You might notice some inconsistencies while this big change takes place.

Manage custom filters in team-managed projects

This page is for team-managed projects

To check whether your project is team-managed or company-managed, select more actions (•••) next to the project name in either the header or the sidebar. At the bottom of the menu that opens, you’ll be able to view whether your project is team-managed or company-managed.

If you're in a company-managed project, check out these company-managed project articles instead.

A custom filter is a saved and reusable search term that helps you find work items in team-managed projects. Custom filters are defined by queries, which are written using JQL (Jira Query Language). These filters are only applicable to the board and backlog, and are limited to a single project.

If you’re a project admin, you can manage custom filters by going to your board or backlog, then selecting > Manage custom filters. You can also access this page by going to Project settings > Board > Custom filters.

Create a custom filter

To create a custom filter in team-managed projects:

  1. From your board or backlog, select > Manage custom filters.

  2. Select Create custom filter.

  3. Enter a name and description for your filter.

  4. Enter a filter query using JQL (Jira Query Language) to tell Jira what work items you’re looking for. As you type, Jira will validate your query and offer a list of autocomplete suggestions based on your query’s context.

  5. Once your query is validated, select Create.

Edit a custom filter

To edit a custom filter in team-managed projects:

  1. From your board or backlog, select > Manage custom filters.

  2. Find the filter you’d like to edit and select > Edit.

  3. From here, you can edit the name, description, and query for your custom filter.

  4. To save your changes, select Update.

Delete a custom filter

To delete a custom filter in team-managed projects:

  1. From your board or backlog, select > Manage custom filters.

  2. Find the filter you’d like to delete and select > Delete.

  3. Select Delete in the confirmation modal to finalize your action.

Note that deleting a custom filter won’t remove any work items from your project.
