Delete a project

You must have the following to do the things described on this page.

Role: Site admin, Project admin, Administrator

Permission: Administer projects

As Jira admins or project leads, you can get rid of projects that you don't need by moving them to trash. The projects — along with its work items, components, attachments, and versions — will be available in trash for 60 days after which they will be permanently deleted.

From the trash, Jira admins can: 

  • View when a project was moved to trash

  • View the user who moved the project to trash

  • View when a project will be permanently deleted

  • Restore a project that was moved to trash

  • Permanently delete a project

Move a project to trash

To move a project to trash:

  1. Next to Projects in the sidebar, select More actions (•••).

  2. Select Manage projects.

  3. Find the relevant project and select More actions (•••), then Move to trash.

  4. In the confirmation dialog, select Move.

You can also navigate to this page by selecting Settings () in the top right, then Projects.

Restore a project from trash

When you restore a project, it will appear in directories and its work items will appear in search results.

To restore a project:

  1. Go to Settings () in the top right, then Projects.

  2. Select Trash from the sidebar.

  3. Find the relevant project and select More actions (•••), then Restore

Delete a project

Once you delete a project, you won't be able to recover it, so make sure you truly want to delete the data associated with your project.

To permanently delete a project:

  1. Go to Settings () in the top right, then Projects.

  2. Select Trash from the sidebar. 

  3. Find the relevant project and select More actions (•••), then Delete permanently.
