Create a business space

Jira spaces represent shared containers for you and your team’s work. When creating a new space in Jira, you can select from a variety of pre-configured templates designed to accommodate different ways of working. For example, if you’re coordinating a go-to-market launch for your product or business, select the Go-to-Market template to create a space with a pre-configured workflow that follows this process. Learn more about the templates available when creating a new space in Jira.

Jira admins can create any kind of space using any template. By default, any user with access to the site can create a space using a team-managed template. This setting can be changed in Jira’s global permissions.

There are a few ways you can create a new space, one way is to:

  1. Select the plus icon + in the space sidebar.

  2. Choose from the dropdown which template you’d like to use.

  3. Give your space a name and review the details of your space. Depending on the template and space type selected, you may also be asked to set additional settings, such as the access level of your space. You can change these details later in your Space settings.

  4. Select Create space.

Another way to create a space is to:

  1. Select Spaces > Create space in the top navigation bar.

  2. Browse the space templates available by category or product. Select a template to view more information, including the template’s default work types and workflow.

  3. Once you’ve chosen a template, select Use template.

  4. Give your space a name and review its details. Depending on the template and space type selected, you may also be asked to set additional settings, such as the access level of your space. You can change these details later in your Space settings.

  5. Select Create space.

A space key will automatically be created. Now that your space has been created, you can configure its settings and begin adding your team.

Space names are unique in Jira. They are always visible to Jira administrators and anyone with the Administer Jira global permission. Avoid using confidential or sensitive terms in your space's name. If you need to label a space with confidential or sensitive information, we recommend using a codename, instead.

Create a company-managed space that shares its settings with another space

Only Jira admins can create company-managed spaces (spaces with shared settings).

When creating a new space in Jira, you can choose to share its settings with another existing space. This means that if a change is made to one space, it will be reflected in all spaces that share this setting.

These settings that can be shared across spaces include:

  • Work types

  • Workflows

  • Screens

  • Fields

  • Permissions

  • Notifications

To share a new space's settings with an existing space, follow the steps above to choose a template and fill in the details of your space. On the Create space screen:

  1. Select the Share settings with an existing space checkbox. The Choose space dropdown will appear.

  2. Choose the space that you want to share your new space's configuration with.

  3. Select Create.
