What to expect from roles when migrating Confluence data
This article describes Confluence’s new role-based access control beta feature.
When roles are enabled in your Confluence instance, you can find them by going to Roles central in Confluence settings or to the Users page in Space settings.
If you don’t see those in your experience, your instance hasn’t been enabled for roles yet.
When migrating permissions data between Confluence Cloud app instances, the outcome of your migration will vary depending on:
the type of migration you’re doing
the space access mode of your source and destination tenants
Space access modes
There are three space access modes that a Confluence app can be in:
Pre roles mode is the current granular permissions experience where only granular permissions can be used to manage access in Confluence spaces.
Roles transition mode is where both granular permissions AND roles can be used to manage access in Confluence spaces.
Roles only mode is the newest mode for new Confluence Cloud sites, where roles are the only way to manage access to Confluence spaces.
Data Center to Cloud migrations
When migrating from Confluence Data Center to Confluence Cloud using the Migration Assistant, the space access mode of the destination Confluence cloud app post migration will vary, depending on what the space access mode was prior to the migration starting.
If the destination Confluence Cloud instance was in Pre roles or Roles only mode before the migration, the mode after migration will be reset to Pre roles.
If the destination Cloud instance was in Roles transition mode before the migration, the mode after migration will remain in Roles transition mode.
Source | Destination (pre-migration) | Destination (post migration) |
|---|---|---|

What to know about Cloud to Cloud data transfers, restoring app data from backup, and space import
In these scenarios, the destination Confluence Cloud instance’s space access mode will always land in roles transition mode. This is because this mode supports both granular permissions and roles and so ensures that all permissions data is safely transferred.
During each migration flow, admins will be notified of this change, with links to documentation and Support.
Source mode | Destination mode (pre migration) | Destination mode (post migration) |
|---|---|---|
Pre roles | Pre roles | Roles transition |
Pre roles | Roles transition | Roles transition |
Pre roles | Roles only | Roles transition |
Roles transition | Roles transition | Roles transition |

Restoring a Confluence Cloud backup
When restoring a Confluence Cloud instance from a backup, the destination Cloud instance’s space access mode will match the mode at the time the backup was made.
Creating a sandbox
When a sandbox is created, the space access mode will match the mode of the parent Confluence Cloud instance it was created off of.
