Configure live docs in Confluence

What are live docs?

Live docs offer a dynamic, efficient, and collaborative way to create and share written content in Confluence.

With live docs, you can create frictionless content that can be edited and collaborated on instantly. Any changes made to your live doc are automatically saved and reflected to all viewers in real time.

How do I turn live docs on or off for my Confluence instance?

Live docs can only be turned on or off for an entire instance. To use live docs in Confluence, you’ll need to have it turned on for your instance.

  1. Select the wheel icon () in the top-right corner to open Confluence administration.

  2. Find Settings > Configuration in the left-hand navigation.

  3. Select New features.

  4. Live docs can be enabled with a simple click and confirmation.

Note: Enabling live docs will also enable early access to a program of new features, such as an updated content layout, upgraded commenting, and updated Marketplace extension points, across your entire Confluence site.

With the new content layout enabled, Marketplace app buttons in the header of pages and live docs will not be supported. Impacted apps are in the process of being supported in other locations. To learn more, visit this status page.

To turn off live docs by default (but still make it possible to turn them on or off at the space level) or remove them from your instance entirely, contact Support.

How do I turn live docs on or off for my space?

Live docs can be turned on or off in any given space by admins.

An entry point to space settings.

To turn live docs on in any space, so that anyone in the space can create them, admins can select Space settings from the More actions () menu of any space.

Then, select Features from the General menu. A menu of feature toggles will appear.

Under Content, toggle Live docs on in order to allow users in the space to create them. Live docs are distinct from pages, and existing pages in the space will not be affected.

This toggle can be turned off anytime. Live docs that were created while the toggle was on will remain as is.

Creating a brand new space and toggling the Live docs feature on will also provide default access to live docs.

Bulk conversion

Admins can convert pages to live docs in bulk via Content manager in Space settings.

Select all pages you want to convert to live docs from the Title column, then select Convert to live doc from the floating toolbar. Once you confirm that you’re ready to convert all items, you should see a success message that the conversion is complete.
