Change a board background
You can change the color or add a custom image to a board by changing your board's background. Once you've changed the board background, all other users that view that board will also see that same background. Choose between six different colours or beautiful photos to express yourself and also make navigating your board's page much easier. Paid subscribers can also upload their own background images.
Changing your board's background
To change a board's background:
Go to the Board menu ()
Select Change Background
Select a color, upload an image, or choose an image from Unsplash
We recommend using single word searches when looking for an image from Unsplash. If you want to see different results, try using synonyms or searching for related concepts (e.g., if you tried "beach", try "sand"). You can even find images by searching for a particular colour.
Once you find an image you like, click on that image to apply it to your board, and enjoy your beautiful new board background.
If you miss the photo and texture backgrounds that were previously available, don't worry—you can still find them on this board.
Custom board backgrounds
You can also upload custom board backgrounds:
Go to the Board menu ()
Select Change Background
Under Custom select Add ()
Choose an image from your computer and select Open
Under Custom, select the new uploaded background to begin using it
Trello background images adjust to the size of your browser window, so there is no ideal pixel resolution for a custom board background. We recommend using a high-quality image in landscape mode (wider than it is tall) for best results.
Custom image settings
You can hover over your uploaded image and select Options to:
Choose whether the image is tiled, or covers the whole screen
Choose either light or dark board text to complement your image
Generate an AI board background
Go to the Board menu (…).
Select Change background.
Select Create a background image.
Enter a text prompt describing the image you want (e.g., "Mountain sunset with purple sky").
Optionally, select a style preset: Realistic, Abstract, Watercolors, or None.
Select the arrow icon to generate the background image.
Once the image is generated, select Use image to apply it as your board background.
The generated background is saved automatically under Custom backgrounds so you can reuse it on other boards.
Image generation credits
You get 10 board background generation credits per month, which reset on the 1st of each month. Board background credits are separate from card cover credits.
If generation fails, no credit is used — you can retry.
If you close the popover while an image is generating, the generation continues in the background. The image will appear in your Custom backgrounds once it's ready.
