Migrate from Jira Work Management to Jira

Customers who are licensed to a standalone Jira Work Management subscription will be migrated to Jira, gaining access to both business and software projects.

Automatic migration to Jira will begin in early 2025.

Manual migration is available as an alternate option for customers with more complex requirements. (Organization admin permissions required.)

How to manually migrate

These instructions are for migrating from one product to another within the same organization, not between different organizations. To manually migrate from one organization to a different one, contact Atlassian Support.

Any deviations from the steps below may impact product and feature permissions. Follow the steps below to avoid unexpected changes to your permissions.

To manually migrate your users from Jira Work Management to Jira, follow the steps below (organization admin permissions required):

  1. If you don’t already have Jira as a separate product, you’ll need to add it:

    1. Go to Settings > User management (under Atlassian Admin).

    2. If you have multiple organizations, select the one containing your Jira Work Management site.

    3. Select Products from the top menu.

    4. Select Add product.

    5. Select Jira.

    6. Create a new site for the new Jira product, or add it to one of your existing sites.

  2. Moving users from Jira Work Management to Jira (in the same organization):

    1. (Skip to step C if you’re still within Atlassian Admin.) Go to Settings > User management (under Atlassian Admin).

    2. If you have multiple organizations, select the one containing your Jira Work Management site.

    3. Select Directory from the top menu.

    4. Select Groups from the side menu.

    5. Select the group(s) that currently provide access to Jira Work Management. (These groups are usually in the format of jira-workmanagement-users-{yoursitename}. You can hover over the Access to column, to see which product(s) are included.)

    6. Within each group(s), select Add product (near the bottom-right of your screen).

    7. Next to the Jira site you want to migrate users into, select User from the product roles dropdown menu, and select Add.

Verify successful migration

  1. On the same Groups page as above, confirm that the groups you updated now include product access to Jira. There are several ways to do this:

    • Hover over the Access to column to see which product(s) are included.
      or

    • Select each group you modified and view the Product access section.
      or

    • Select Products (top menu). Locate the Jira site you wanted to migrate users into. Select Manage product. The groups you selected should be listed.

  2. Select Billing from the top menu. Select the number of billable users for the Jira site you’re migrating into. Those users should now have access to the Jira site.

  3. (Optional) Ask one of your migrated users (with Create project permissions) to create a software project. If they can, this confirms they have access to Jira.

You have successfully migrated if you can confirm the above. If you cannot verify successful migration, contact Atlassian Support.

If you have multiple Jira Work Management instances within the same organization, repeat the steps above for each.
