Backup and restore: Frequently asked questions
We’re rolling out a new backup and restore experience for a limited number of customers on the Enterprise plan through an open beta program.
Backup and restore isn’t available in the Atlassian Government environment.
Which products can I back up?
You can back up Confluence and all Jira products, including Jira Service Management and Jira Product Discovery. Some entities aren’t backed up. More about what data is backed up and restored
Who can back up and restore?
You need to have organization admin and app admin permissions to backup and restore data.
Can I assign a single product to multiple policies?
Yes, you can assign one product to two backup policies. You can use one policy to schedule and store backups in Atlassian storage, and you can create a second policy to schedule and store backups in your Amazon S3 bucket.
Can I run backups daily?
Yes, you can run backups daily. You can schedule them to run automatically.
How long is each backup stored for?
Each backup is stored in Atlassian storage for 14 days, after which the backup expires and can’t be restored.
Can I back up only some of my Jira projects or Confluence spaces?
Currently, you can only have full backups, which means all projects for a Jira product and all spaces for a Confluence product.
Can I selectively back up some data?
Yes. Currently, we offer options to include or exclude users and groups, and attachments in your backups and while restoring.
Do the backups include all data?
Not all data types are backed up and restored. More about what data is backed up and restored
Can I back up products encrypted by customer-managed keys?
Yes. When you back up products that are encrypted using customer-managed keys, all backups are encrypted.
How long do I have to restore a backup?
You can restore backed-up Jira and Confluence product data at any time until the backup expires. You have 14 days from the backup to restore your data.
How often can I restore a backup?
You can restore a specific backup once in 7 days.
What backups can I restore?
We recommend you restore only complete backups, although incomplete backups can also be restored. Incomplete backups are missing some attachments in Jira or missing some spaces in Confluence. Backups that are in progress, failed, or expired can’t be restored.
What are the limitations of the location where you’re restoring data?
To restore your backup, the product should not contain any user-generated data. It can’t contain active, deleted, or archived content. For newly provisioned Confluence products, you need to delete the default personal space too.
