Set up units in your organization
This feature is currently in beta and is gradually rolling out. It may not be available to all organizations at this time.

When to create a unit
Units are designed to have distinct data and collaboration boundaries. Create units only when you need strict data boundaries for organizational requirements. This keeps your organization connected while ensuring knowledge separation where needed. More about getting started with units
Units once created can't be rolled back. Make sure you understand your data and collaboration requirements before setting up units. You need to contact support to delete units, subject to eligibility requirements.
Create a unit
To create a unit:
Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.
Select Units in the side navigation.
Select Create unit.
Follow the prompts to set up your unit.
It may take a few minutes for your unit to be ready as we’ll set up default apps, search results, and Rovo context when you create a unit.
Once your unit is created, configure your unit settings:
Assign unit admins: Designate specific individuals to manage the users and apps within each new unit. <See unit admin roles>
Add users or groups: Define which users belong to the unit. This affects their search results, @mentions, and Rovo context.
Add apps: Associate Atlassian apps with the unit.
Assign an allocation policy: Update your organization-level identity provider settings and use allocation policies to ensure users are provisioned into the correct units.
You can also rename units, add custom icons, unit descriptions and context, which will appear in the unit switcher.
How units impact organization administration
Some organizations can view units but not create new units. Site admins in such organizations will be given the unit admin role to manage existing units. These include:
Organizations without an Enterprise plan that have multiple directories.
Organizations that had an Enterprise plan, but are now on a different plan.
View units
To view your units:
Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.
Select Units in the side navigation.
Select a unit to see more details about the apps, users, and groups it contains.
Assign a unit admin
A unit admin is a delegated role that allows specific users to manage the users, groups, and apps within a single unit.
Once a unit is created, organization admins can assign a unit admin to manage it. More about the unit admin role
Manage sites within a unit
Because every site resides within a unit, the apps on that site operate within that unit’s specific boundary. This means that search results, Rovo, and user mentions are limited to the other sites and users within that same unit.
If you are in the original user management experience and enable units,
Each existing site and its user directory is set up as a separate unit. Consider merging units if those sites need a shared collaboration boundary. You can also create additional units and associate new sites with them.
Site admins automatically become unit admins, and their permission scope shifts from managing a site to managing the unit that contains it.
Move a single site between units
Currently, you can’t move a single site from one unit to another if that unit contains multiple sites. If you need to move a site from one unit to another, use the existing data transfer functionality. Data transfer operates within enforced guardrails and soft limits - such as project and object copy thresholds - to ensure reliable migration performance.
Moving a site changes its collaboration boundary. This affects who users can @mention, what they can find in search results, and how Rovo accesses data.
Add a user to a unit
Organization admins and unit admins can add users to any app or group in any unit, depending on their admin permissions.
To add a user to a unit:
Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.
Select Units in the side navigation.
Select a unit to view its details.
Go to the Users tab, and select Invite users.
Follow the flow to add a user to the unit.
Alternatively, you can also add users from the Directory page. See Manage user access to units
Add an app to a unit
Organization admins can add apps to their unit. If a unit admin manages multiple units, they’ll be prompted to select the units they administer.
To add apps to your unit:
Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.
Select Units in the side navigation.
Select a unit to view its details.
The Apps tab will load as the default tab in the unit profile page.
Select Add app.
Follow the flow to add a new app/collection to the unit.
After you add your first app to the unit, the default platform apps (Home, Project, Goals, and Teams) will also be added.
