Add an external MCP server from Atlassian Administration

Before you can use tools or skills in Rovo, Studio, and other experiences, you need to add an external MCP (Model Context Protocol) server from Atlassian Administration.

Server requirements

If you're connecting a custom MCP server, the server must meet the following requirements:

  • Publicly accessible over HTTPS - The server must have a public URL with a valid TLS certificate. Local or private network servers are not supported.

  • Streamable HTTP transport - The server must implement the MCP Streamable HTTP transport. SSE-only and stdio transports are not supported.

  • OAuth 2.1 with authorization_code grant - The server must support OAuth 2.1 authorization code flow with PKCE. This is used to authenticate users.

  • Dynamic Client Registration (DCR) - The server's authorization server must support Dynamic Client Registration (RFC 7591). Atlassian uses this to register itself automatically — no manual OAuth client setup is needed on your end.

Add an external MCP server

  1. Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.

  2. From the sidebar menu, expand Apps.

  3. Expand Sites then select the site where the MCP server will be added.

  4. Select Connected apps.

  5. Expand the dropdown button beside Explore apps.

  6. Select Add external MCP server.

  7. Read the disclaimers, then select Agree and continue.

  8. Select the MCP server you want to add. If it’s not in the list, select Custom MCP server.

  9. Select Next then follow the installation instructions.

After you've added the MCP server, you'll be taken to the settings screen where you can configure tools.

Access the Rovo agent linked to the MCP server

Some MCP servers allow you to access and use a pre-built Rovo agent straight after setup. If a Rovo agent is available for your MCP server, this will appear under Tools selection.

To access the Rovo agent linked to the MCP server:

  1. Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.

  2. From the sidebar menu, expand Apps.

  3. Expand Sites then select the site where the MCP server is located.

  4. Select Connected apps.

  5. From the list of connected apps, locate the MCP server.

  6. Under the Actions column, select View app details.

  7. From Tools selection, select View agent.

This will take you to the Rovo agent profile page. Here you can find the description and other details about the agent. You can also start a new conversation by selecting Chat with agent.

For users in your organization, they can search or browse Rovo agents to the get to the same profile page.
