Understand billing for sandboxes

How you get billed and how you manage subscriptions for your sandbox environment is different from your production environment. This page gives you an overview of the differences.

When you create a sandbox for an Atlassian app, you become the billing and technical contact for the sandbox. The original billing and technical contacts for the app cannot manage subscriptions for a sandbox.

Will I get billed for my sandboxes?

If you have a Premium or an Enterprise plan, you can create some sandboxes for free and they will not be included in your bill.

You can purchase additional sandboxes for apps that are on annual subscription plans. These sandboxes will be billed separately as add-ons. More about sandboxes

If you have an Enterprise plan, you don’t need to limit the use of these additional sandboxes to a particular production site, you can use it for the same app in any production site in your organization.

How many sandboxes are included in my plan?

Sandboxes are available only for some Atlassian apps and the number of sandboxes you can create for free depends on your plan. More about sandbox feature availability

The following table lists the number of free sandboxes included with each pricing plan. To find out how many sandboxes have already been created in your organization, navigate to Navigate Atlassian Administration > Apps > Sandboxes.

Pricing plan

Sandbox limits

Free or Standard

Sandboxes aren’t available to apps on Free or Standard plans.

Premium

With a Premium plan for an app, you can create one free sandbox for that app.

Enterprise

With an Enterprise plan for an app, you can create up to five free sandboxes for that app.

For example, let’s say you have an Enterprise plan for Jira. And you have and four Jira apps in the production sites: Site 1, Site 2, Site 3, and Site 4. You can allocate two Jira sandboxes to Site 1, two Jira sandboxes to Site 2, and one Jira sandbox to Site 3.

  • The above limits apply to app sandboxes and not sandbox sites.

  • You may have had additional sandbox limits if you’ve participated in our Open beta for multiple sandboxes. The sandbox limit will change to 5 free sandboxes per app at the end of the grace period (March 31, 2026).

What are the user limits for my sandbox

Sandboxes have the same user limits as their linked production environments.

How does billing work for Marketplace apps

Billing for Marketplace apps in you sandbox depends on the subscription and the billing experience of your production environment.

I have a paid subscription in my production environment

If you have a paid subscription for a Marketplace app in your production environment, you can add it to your sandbox for free. If you cancel the subscription or uninstall a Marketplace app in production, we’ll revoke access to that app in sandbox.

If you have a paid subscription for a Marketplace app in your production environment, you can add it for free on up to 5 sandboxes that are linked to the same production site. If you want to add the Marketplace app to additional sandboxes for that production site, you’ll need to purchase the subscription for that Marketplace app on the sandbox separately.

If you cancel the subscription or uninstall a Marketplace app in production, we’ll revoke access to that app in sandbox.

I don’t have a paid subscription in my production environment

If you don’t have a paid subscription in your production environment, you can try apps in your sandbox environment for free. After the trial ends, we’ll notify you so you can add your payment details and continue to use the app in your sandbox through a paid subscription.

Note that we offer only monthly subscription to such apps and the bill is calculated based on the number of users who have access to your sandbox. The number of users with access to your production, won’t impact your bills.

If you remove a Marketplace app from your sandbox without cancelling its subscription or stopping the trial, you will still be billed. To avoid billing:

  • cancel the subscription before removing an app you subscribed to from the sandbox

  • stop the trial before removing an app you are trialing in the sandbox
