Backups: Frequently asked questions

New Backup and Restore Experience Open Beta: Enrolment Closed
New enrolment is now closed. Customers who have already used the feature in the open beta will continue to have access until general availability.

Backup and restore isn’t available in the Atlassian Government environment.

You can no longer store backups in Amazon S3 storage. Customers who've used S3 storage in the past can still use it.

Which apps can I back up?

You can back up Confluence and all Jira apps, including Jira Service Management and Jira Product Discovery. Some entities aren’t backed up. More about what data is backed up and restored

Who can back up and restore?

You need to have organization admin and app admin permissions to backup and restore data.

Can I assign a single app to multiple policies?

Yes, you can assign one app to two backup policies.

Yes, you can run backups daily. You can schedule them to run automatically.

A backup is stored for 14 days in Atlassian-owned storage, after which the backup expires and can’t be restored.

Currently, you can only have full backups, which means all projects for a Jira app and all spaces for a Confluence app.

Can I selectively back up some data?

Yes. Currently, we offer options to include or exclude users and groups, and attachments in your backups and while restoring.

Can I back up apps encrypted by customer-managed keys?

Yes, we support encryption using customer-managed keys. Read more customer-managed key encryption for backups.

Can I use the Jira and Confluence backup managers and the new backup solution to back up data?

Yes, you can use both the tools, but you can’t run backups using both the tools at the same time. The backups will fail.

Can I stop or cancel a backup?

No, you can’t stop or cancel a backup.

Can I deactivate a backup policy?

No, at this moment you can’t deactivate a policy.

You can restore backed-up Jira and Confluence app data at any time until the backup expires. You have 14 days from the backup to restore your data from Atlassian storage.

We recommend you restore only complete backups, although incomplete backups can also be restored. Incomplete backups are missing some attachments in Jira or missing some spaces in Confluence. Backups that are in progress, failed, or expired can’t be restored.

  • To restore your backup, the app should not contain any user-generated data. It can’t contain active, deleted, or archived content. For newly provisioned Confluence apps, you need to delete the default personal space too.

  • You can’t restore to an app that has a backup in progress.

  • You can’t restore to an app that has a restore in progress.
