Add, edit, and delete a field configuration

As a Jira administrator, you can configure the default field configuration to make specific fields required or hidden based on the needs of your team. You can create additional field configurations to manage fields across multiple projects, issue types, and screens. A field configuration can be associated with an issue type within a field configuration scheme, which can then be associated with a project.

To configure the layout of the new Jira issue view—which fields appear and the order they appear in—open an issue and choose Configure at the bottom-right. To find out more about configuring the issue layout, check out Configure field layout in the issue view.

How to add a new field configuration

  1. Select > Issues.

  2. In the Fields section, select Field configurations

  3. Select Add field configuration

  4. Enter a name that best describes your new field configuration and a description that explains when it should be used.

  5. Select Add. You can then modify the behaviors of the fields within this configuration. Check out Changing a field configuration for more information.

How to copy a field configuration

  1. Select > Issues.

  2. In the Fields section, select Field configurations

  3. Select Copy next to the field configuration you wish to copy.

  4. Enter a name and description for the new field configuration.

  5. Select Copy

How to edit and delete a field configuration

While you cannot edit or delete the Default Field Configuration, you can easily edit the name and description of a field configuration so other administrators know when to use it. You can also delete a field configuration that is no longer associated with a field configuration scheme. To do so:

  1. Select > Issues.

  2. In the Fields section, select Field configurations

  3. Select Edit or Delete next to the field configuration you wish to update.

The new issue view (currently for Jira Work Management boards and Jira Software boards and backlogs), uses the View issue screen configuration to determine which fields to show. To add or remove fields from a screen, select Screens for a field when configuring the field and check the "View issue" screen for the appropriate projects.

How to associate a field configuration with issue types and projects

You can associate a field configuration with an issue type by creating a field configuration scheme. The field configuration scheme can then be associated with one of your Jira application projects. Follow the steps on Configuring a field configuration scheme to learn more.
