Get started with VS Code

Atlassian for VS Code brings the functionality of Atlassian products to VS Code. This extension combines the power of Jira and Bitbucket to streamline the developer workflow within VS Code. With Atlassian for VS Code you can create and view work items, start work on work items, create pull requests, review code, start builds, get build statuses, and more.

Getting Started

• Make sure you have VS Code version 1.37.0 or above

• Download the extension from the marketplace

• Authenticate with Jira and/or Bitbucket from the 'Atlassian: Open Settings' page available in the command palette

• From the command palette, type 'Atlassian:' to see all of the extensions available commands

Install the Atlassian for VS Code extension

1. Open VS Code and select the Extensions icon on the left sidebar.

2. Search for Atlassian

3. Open Atlassian: Jira and Bitbucket.

4. Select Install.

You can also go directly to the extension at the following link: Atlassian: Jira and Bitbucket. Select Install to begin the installation process.

When you install the extension for the first time or upgrade the extension from a previous version, you’ll see a welcome screen that provides the recent changelog as well as buttons to configure the extension or leave feedback.

Authenticate with VS Code

Next, you’ll need to authenticate the VS Code extension with Jira and/or Bitbucket.

Authenticate Jira Cloud

1. Open Atlassian Settings. Open the command palette (macOS: Command + Shift + P; Windows: Ctrl + Shift + P), search for Atlassian: Open Settings, and hit Enter.

2. Open the Jira tab, then open the Authentication section if it's not visible.

3. Select Login to Jira Cloud. This will open the Atlascode Integration page in your browser. If you aren't already logged in, you'll be prompted to log in to your Atlassian account.

4. On the Atlascode Integration page, select the Authorize for dropdown menu to open the list of sites (instances) you can authenticate with VS Code.

5. Select the site you want to authenticate.

6. Select Accept to complete authentication.

7. Select Back to VS Code to return to VS Code.

If you’d like to authenticate another Jira site, select Login to Jira Cloud again and select another site.

Authenticate Bitbucket Cloud

1. Open Atlassian Settings. Open the command palette (macOS: Command + Shift + P; Windows: Ctrl + Shift + P), search for Atlassian: Open Settings, and hit Enter.

2. Open the Bitbucket tab, then open the Authentication section if it's not visible.

3. Select Login to Bitbucket Cloud. This will open the OAuth authorization page in your browser. If you aren't already logged in, you'll be prompted to log in to your Atlassian account.

4. Review the request and select Grant access.

5. Select Back to VS Code to return to VS Code.

Authenticate Jira Data Center

1. Open Atlassian Settings. Open the command palette (macOS: Command + Shift + P; Windows: Ctrl + Shift + P), search for Atlassian: Open Settings, and hit Enter.

2. Open the Jira tab, then open the Authentication section if it's not visible.

3. Select Add Custom Jira Site.

4. Enter the Base URL of your Jira instance and select Save. The Base URL is the scheme and domain name of the Jira instance, such as: https://jira.mycompany.com.

5. Enter your username and password and select Save.

Authenticate Bitbucket Data Center

1. Open Atlassian Settings. Open the command palette (macOS: Command + Shift + P; Windows: Ctrl + Shift + P), search for Atlassian: Open Settings, and hit Enter.

2. Open the Bitbucket tab, then open the Authentication section if it's not visible.

3. Select Add Custom Bitbucket Site.

4. Enter the Base URL of your Bitbucket instance and select Save. The Base URL is the scheme and domain name of the Bitbucket instance, such as: https://bitbucket.mycompany.com.

5. Enter your username and password (or a personal access token) and select Save.
