What is ordered migration?
Ordered migration is a sequencing solution for migrating Marketplace app from Data Center to Cloud using the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA). It runs app migrations in dependency-aware groups rather than all at once. By organizing Marketplace apps into sequential groups, the platform ensures that the apps known to modify site data in complex ways complete their processes before other apps begin migrating.
This sequencing helps you avoid migration failures and data conflicts that occur when multiple Marketplace apps attempt to modify the same Cloud site components simultaneously.
How ordered migration works
Marketplace apps are automatically assigned to groups based on how they interact with the Cloud site. Some Marketplace apps can affect the Cloud site in ways that may influence the migration of other apps, so Atlassian may run these apps in an earlier group. All other apps are placed in the subsequent group. This grouping helps ensure a more reliable migration by preventing conflicts between apps that run in parallel.
Marketplace apps in the first group start migrating. Their status is shown as In progress.
Marketplace apps in subsequent groups are held in a Paused status. The length of time apps remain paused depends on how long the earlier group takes to complete.
Once every Marketplace app in the previous group reaches either a Success or Incomplete status, the platform automatically runs the migration for the next group in sequence.
Multiple Marketplace apps within the same group can migrate at the same time, ensuring the migration remains as efficient as possible.
What this means for your migrations
While ordered migrations run sequentially and may increase the total time for Marketplace app migrations to complete, it significantly reduces the risk of costly delays and manual troubleshooting required to fix failed migrations.
Monitor the migration progress in JCMA. If a Marketplace app remains paused after all apps in the previous group have reached Success or Incomplete status, check the JCMA progress logs for additional information.
