Import data from a software project to a business project

Moving your work from a software project to a business project just got easier.

Using the importer, you can directly import your existing project data into a new business project. This helps save the effort of manually moving data and ensures the project information is relevant and accurate. Not to mention, your teams now get to work in the Jira that best fits their use case.

Importing data

To directly import your data using the Jira Software importer:

  1. From the navigation bar, select Projects > Create project.

  2. From the sidebar, go to More > select Import data.

  3. Select Import to a new business project.

  4. In the import from an app section select Jira Software.

  5. Select the software project from where you’d like to import data from. Once you select the project, the About this software project section will display the number of issues in the selected project that will be imported.

  6. Select Next.

  7. You’ll need to create a new business project for where you want your imported data to land. You can customize the name of the project, its access and key type. Then select Next.

The project key and type will automatically be selected for you. You can customize the key as needed. You can also modify the project name and key later from your project settings.

Note: The project type cannot be changed and will be imported to match the software project from where you are importing the data.

8. Next, review the details for your new project. The screen will summarize how your software project data will be imported:

  • Field mapping: View and customize how your software project standard and custom fields are mapped in Jira Work Management.

  • Import users: Bring users from your software project to your new project so they remain assigned to the work. These users won’t receive any notifications when they’re added to the new business project.

  • Import attachments: Select whether to import attachments into your new project.

Any people field, @mention, comment with an attached name, and reporter or assignee fields will be left blank if users from the software project are not imported to the business project.

9. Select Import when you’re ready to start importing your data.

The importer will automatically start bringing over the data from the software project in the background. You’ll find a progress bar that will indicate the status of your import.

You can continue to work on other things and return to the project page to see the progress of your import.

Once the data is imported, your software project issues will show on the board view as issues in your new business project. More about the board view in Jira Work Management

If your import fails or is partially complete, you can download an error log at the end of the import. Use the troubleshooting guide to fix errors and try importing your project again.

Contact support if you’re facing any issues with your import.

Edit fields in your business project

You can edit how the software project fields are imported into your business project during the import.

The Review details screen will summarize how your data will map to the new business project. Select Field mapping. This is where you’ll find how your data has been automatically mapped.

This is where you can:

  • Edit how your software project data is mapped.

  • Use the toggles to indicate whether or not to include specific fields in your import.

To edit your fields:

  1. Select the dropdown of the field you want to edit.

  2. You can either select an existing field from the options provided or select a custom field type that best suits the format of your field. If you select a custom field, it’ll take the same name as your software project.

Note: Summary is a required field in Jira Work Management. It can’t be modified or excluded from an import.

Any changes you make will be automatically saved in real-time. Once you’ve edited your fields, head back to the Review details screen.

Supported software project field types

Jira Work Management has two types of fields:

  • System fields: These fields are “built-in” or part of the software by default.

  • Custom fields: These fields are customizable based on the user’s needs.

The data from your software project field types can map to either system fields or custom fields in Jira Work Management.

The following software project field can’t be mapped to either system or custom fields in Jira Work Management and aren’t supported as part of the import.
