Jira Work Management boards are designed to give you an easy and clear way to visualize work. You get a snapshot of project progress, including what work is yet to be started, what's in progress, and what is completed.
This page covers Jira Work Management boards. For Jira Software boards, take a look at:
To start using boards, open your project and select Board in the sidebar.
By default, items are listed in the order of oldest to newest by creation date.
Issues disappear from the last column after 14 days of inactivity. Select the link at the bottom of this column to see them again.
The board can display up to 1,000 issues. If there are more than 1,000 issues, the newest issues may not appear on the board.
As you start new tasks or finish something, move it along the issue workflow from one status to the next. Pick up issues, then drag and drop them as they progress.
You can move items around within a column, which lets you order tasks any way you like, such as by priority, complexity, or due date.
If you're a Jira Work Management admin, you can drag the columns into any order you like without affecting the issue workflow.
Click an issue to open the issue details view. From there you can update issue information, like the description, assignee, and due date; comment or watch the issue; and add attachments, linked issues, and subtasks.
Quick-add buttons: Add attachments, subtasks, linked issues, and content from Atlassian Marketplace apps.
Transition issues: Quickly get from to-do to done, and any status or workflow step in between.
Watch and more actions: Watch the issue, and perform other issue actions like move and clone.
Issue details: Assignee, labels, components, time tracking, custom fields, and more. Choose Show more to view all issue fields.
Configure issue layout: Move and hide fields in the issue view.
Docked comment bar: Always there, so you can quickly add a comment no matter how far you've scrolled.
There's a direct correlation between your project's workflow and the column order on your board.
Workflow steps:
Jira Work Management admins can move columns around. To add or rename columns, you need to edit the workflow. For more information, see How do I build the workflow I want?
If your project contains customized workflows, you might not be able to see your issues on the board. Here are the two main cases where this can happen.
For instance, you have customized a workflow for a certain issue type and you have multiple workflows in your project.
Task issue type
Content issue type
The board displays a column for each status, so where the statuses aren't the same, the board doesn't know which workflow to show.
To start using boards, you may want to consider aligning your workflows. For more information, see How do I build the workflow I want?
2: Two issue transitions go to the same status
For instance, if any of the workflows in your project are set up similar to this:
In the above example, two transitions both go from one status to another. You may have something like this set up because there are separate transition events you wish to record.
If you want to use boards, you need to restructure your workflow so that there is only one transition between the two statuses. For example, you might change things to be something like this:
If you have unsaved draft workflows, you may get an error message when you try to move board columns. To fix this:
Choose Settings () > Issues.
Choose Workflows.
Find the board workflow for the project and click Edit.
Save or Discard the unsaved draft.
