Set up a space policy

Space policies is currently in open beta. Functionality and settings may vary depending on your site configuration. Read more about the space policies rollout

Space policies let you define guardrails for team-managed spaces without removing teams' ability to self-serve. When a space policy is active, it prevents space admins from creating space-specific fields and statuses. Teams can still use any global fields and statuses available on your Jira site.

Things you should know

  • You must be a Jira admin to create and manage space policies.

  • Space policies apply only to team-managed spaces.

  • Space policies are available only on Standard, Premium and Enterprise plans.

Enable space policies

To enable space policies in your Jira admin settings:

  1. Select Settings (), then select System.

  2. Select Beta features.

  3. Find Space policies and turn on the toggle.

When you turn on the space policies toggle, global statuses will be automatically enabled too (if they’re not already enabled).

Set up a space policy

Once you’ve enabled space policies, go to your global space settings to select which policies you want to apply, and the spaces where you want them.

To set up a space policy:

  1. Select Settings (), then select Spaces.

  2. Select Space policies.

  3. Find the policy you want to apply: Global fields only, Global statuses only, or both.

    1. To apply a policy to new spaces, select the toggle next to Set as default policy for new spaces.

    2. To apply a policy to existing spaces, select Add spaces.

  4. Search for a space by name, or use the Category filter to narrow the list.

  5. Select the spaces you want to govern.

  6. Select Add spaces.

If a space backs a custom template, it's marked as a template space, and any new spaces created from that template will automatically inherit the policy.

Add more spaces to a policy

You can apply an existing space policy to more spaces at any time. To apply a policy to more spaces:

  1. Select Settings (), then select Spaces.

  2. Select Space policies.

  3. Find the policy you want to update, and select Spaces to open the side panel.

  4. Search for a space by name, or use the Category filter to narrow the list.

  5. Select the spaces you want to add.

  6. Select Update spaces to save.

Remove a space from a policy

Removing a space from a policy lifts the restrictions immediately. Space admins in that space can then create space-specific fields and statuses again.

To remove a space from a policy:

  1. Select Settings (), then select Spaces.

  2. Select Space policies.

  3. Find the policy you want to update, and select Spaces to open the side panel.

  4. In the side panel, deselect the space you want to remove.

  5. Select Update spaces to save.
