Migrate from Cloud to Atlassian Government Cloud
This page will guide you on how to set up your Atlassian Government Cloud environment and the steps to migrate your data from Atlassian Cloud to Atlassian Government Cloud.
Before you begin
Before you begin your migration, contact us to get started with your Atlassian Government Cloud environment.
Join Atlassian Government Cloud
Contact us using this form or reach out to your Atlassian point of contact. You’ll participate in assessment workshops to assess your existing data footprint and eligibility for Atlassian Government Cloud and migrations. We’ll then offer a subscription and support for your migration.
Set up your Atlassian Government Cloud environment
After you purchase your Atlassian Government Cloud subscription, you can begin onboarding. During onboarding, Atlassian will provision and pre-configure your Atlassian Government Cloud environment so it’s ready for migration. This includes:
Connecting your identity provider
Verifying your domain
Configuring single sign-on
Provisioning Atlassian apps, such as Jira or Confluence
Installing Marketplace apps
Granting access to the Atlassian Government Cloud Support portal for support requests
We’ll need some details from you, such as DNS records or connection details for the identity provider. For details on what’s required, see:
Get access to the Atlassian Government environment
Plan your migration
Review the key considerations and limitations involved in migrating your apps to Atlassian Government Cloud apps to prepare for your migration. Plan your Cloud to Atlassian Government Cloud migration
Check your permissions
You need to be an organization admin in the Atlassian Cloud and Atlassian Government Cloud environments to migrate data.
Migrate data
To migrate data from Atlassian Cloud to Atlassian Government Cloud, follow these steps:
Step 1: Select app
Step 2: Connect to Cloud
Step 3: Select the source and destination and include attachments
Step 4: Validate and review data
Step 1: Select app
To begin your migration:
Go to Atlassian Administration in your Atlassian Government Cloud environment.
Select Data transfer, then Create transfer plan.
Select In Atlassian Cloud to indicate you want to migrate data from an Atlassian Cloud environment, and select Next.
Select the app you want to transfer. You’ll see Jira and Confluence based on the apps available in your source environment (Cloud). We recommend that you transfer one app at a time.
Select Next.
Step 2: Connect to Cloud
To connect your Atlassian Government Cloud environment with your Atlassian Cloud environment:
Select Generate key to create a linking key. Copy the key and store it somewhere you can retrieve it.
Switch to your Atlassian Cloud account. Open a terminal in Mac/Linux or Command Prompt/PowerShell in Windows and paste this curl command in the window.
curl -X POST \ "<https://api.atlassian.com/api/v2/org-id/<ORG_ID>>/submit-key" \ -u "<your-email>:<API_TOKEN>" \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -H "Accept: application/json" \ -d '{ "key": "<GENERATED_KEY>" }' -w "\nHTTP Status: %{http_code}\n"
3. Add the following details in the command and submit:
<ORG_ID>: Provide the organization ID of the source site (Atlassian Cloud).<your-email>: The email address used in your Atlassian Cloud account.<API_TOKEN>: Generate a token from the Atlassian Cloud site and add it.<GENERATED_KEY>: The linking key generated as part of the migration.
4. If you see HTTP 202, the command is successful. If you see the following codes, you'll need to make changes accordingly:
401: API token has expired. Use another API token.
B1013: The user is not an organization admin. Make sure you have organization admin permission.
B1004: The linking key was already submitted. Generate another linking key and try again.
429: Request is rate limited. Try again after a few minutes.
5. Once you’re done, go back to the migration page, paste the linking key into the Validate your key section, and select Validate.
6. Once the key is validated, select Next.
Step 3: Select the source and destination and include attachments
Select the source (Atlassian Cloud site) and the destination (Atlassian Government Cloud site) sites for the migration.
Enter a name for the transfer plan.
Select the purpose of transfer.
Select Next once you’re done.
Select whether you’d like to add attachments to the migrations, and select Next.
Step 4: Validate and review data
We’ll run checks to identify any potential problems. When we finish checking your data, we mark the results with a status, indicating whether any attention is required.
Status | What it means |
|---|---|
FIX | We found problems with users, groups, or a specific space in your migration. You’ll need to resolve the error before you can copy data. |
CHECK | We found problems with users, groups, or a specific space. You can copy data, but we recommend that you review the warning. |
READY | You have no warnings or problems to resolve, and you can copy data. |
Once you’ve fixed all the problems, select Next. Review the migration plan and status, and select Start copy.
You can follow the progress of your migration in the Data transfer screen in Atlassian Administration. You’ll see one of five possible statuses.
Status | What it means |
|---|---|
Queued | Data included in this plan is next in queue to be copied. |
Running | Data included in this plan is currently being copied. |
Complete | Data included in this plan was successfully copied. |
Incomplete | Data included in this plan was partially copied. For example, this could mean that 10 out of 15 spaces were copied. |
Failed | Data included in this plan could not be copied. |
You can select Download report to learn more about what was migrated.
