Migrate Marketplace app data separately

As of version 1.12.46 of the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA), you’ll have the ability to separately migrate Marketplace app data. This helps you migrate only Marketplace app data (app custom fields and workflow rules, app configuration, and other app-owned entities), without having to migrate Jira Core data (projects, work items, and Jira’s project configuration) at the same time.

This allows greater flexibility in planning, testing, and executing a migration from Server/Data Center to Cloud.

Preconditions to follow before migrating Marketplace app data

Before migrating Marketplace app data separately, make sure to meet the following preconditions:

  1. When selecting projects for which you wish to migrate related Marketplace app data, ensure the projects have been part of a migration within 14 days prior to migrating the app data separately. This can be done by:

    1. Confirming that All data migration option was selected.

    2. Confirming that the status of the project migration is either success or incomplete (Note: The whole migration doesn’t have to be successful. Only the required projects should be successfully migrated).

This ensures the Jira Core project data has been successfully migrated to the cloud, before we migrate Marketplace app data.

2. Select at least one Marketplace app while migrating app data separately.

After you migrate your project data, make sure you don’t modify it until after your Marketplace app data-only migration is complete.

Execute a Marketplace app data-only migration

Assuming the above pre-conditions are met, here are the steps to migrate Marketplace app data for any projects:

  1. Go to Administration > System > Migrate to cloud > Jira Cloud Migration Assistant.

  2. Go to Assess your apps, and select View app assessment.

  3. In the Assess your apps screen, select Marketplace apps whose data you wish to migrate, and select Done.

  4. Go back to Migration Assistant home > Prepare your apps, and select View app preparation.

  5. Connect to a cloud site, install apps, and agree to app migration.

  6. Go back to Migration Assistant home, find the Migrate your data card, and select Create a migration or manage your migrations.

  7. From the Choose screen, go to Projects > Select projects and select the projects that are associated with the app data you want to migrate.

  8. Click Next.

Note: Only app data associated with the projects you’ve selected will be migrated.

  9. On the Select data preferences screen, choose the App Data Only option.

  10. Select Add to migration.

  11. Once you return to the Choose screen, go to the Apps selection and select All, and Apply Changes.

  12. Select Save and Run Pre-migration Checks.

    1. The migration assistant will run pre-migration checks to verify that the Marketplace apps you’ve selected on the Assess your apps screen are ready to migrate, and you have met the preconditions for the selected projects. It will also warn you if there are any post-migration steps.

  13. Once you pass the pre-migration checks, continue to Review migration, and select Run. Your data migration will begin.

Fix workflow schemes after migration

If you receive a warning in your pre-migration check that you have apps with workflow rules in your Marketplace app data-only Migration, you will need to perform some post-migration steps to ensure workflow schemes are linked correctly to your projects.

After app data migration, you can view migrated workflow schemes by selecting Settings > Work items > Workflow schemes > Inactive. Read how to reconfigure migrated workflow schemes
