Preload app data before migration

Preloading app data allows you to transfer a substantial portion of your app data well in advance of the actual migration day. This means that you can minimize your migration downtime and ensure a smoother transition with less disruption to operations.
This approach not only enhances the performance and reliability of the migration plan but also facilitates faster retries in case of any issues.

Note: Preloading app data is a 2-step process.
First, preload the app data (for apps that support this feature).
Next, you’ll need to run a migration for the core product & remaining app data, within 14 days of completing the preload.

How to preload app data

Step 1: Select, prepare and preload app/s

  1. Open the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant by going to Administration > System > Migrate to cloud.

  2. Start app assessment from the Assess your apps card.

  3. On the Assess your apps screen, select an app, and the side panel will display a note if the app’s data can be preloaded.

Note: You can only preload data for apps that support the preload feature. You must also select the app on the Assess your apps screen.

  4. Select the app/s you want to preload, and complete the rest of the app selection steps.

  5. On the home screen, find the Prepare your apps card, and use it to connect to a cloud site, install apps and agree to app migration.

  6. Next, on the Migration Assistant home screen, find the Migrate your data card and continue to create or manage a migration.

  7. From the Choose screen, go to Projects > Select projects and select the projects that are associated with the app data you want to preload. Alternatively, select all projects to include preloadable app data from all your projects.

  8. Click Next.

Note: Only app data associated with the projects you’ve selected will be preloaded, and this excludes any of the project data.

  9. On the Select data preferences screen, choose the Preloadable app data only option.

  10. Select Add to migration, and continue with the migration.

The Migration Assistant will run pre-migration checks to verify that the apps you’ve selected on the Assess your apps screen actually have preloadable data. You can monitor the progress of the migration on the dashboard.

After the app preload is complete, you can proceed to run a migration for the remaining app and project data.

Note: You must run the follow-up migration within 14 days of completing the app data preload.

Step 2: Run a migration for the remaining data

Within 14 days of completing the app data preload, you must run a migration that includes:

  • the apps you need in cloud (including those for which you have already preloaded data), and

  • the project data you need in cloud.

After completing the migration, we recommend checking the data that has been preloaded and migrated to cloud to ensure accuracy and completeness.
