Set up your objects in Assets

This guide takes you from an empty Assets to your first useful object - something you can see, connect, and act on. The steps are the same wherever you use Assets; if you are setting it up in Jira, a short Jira-specific note tells you where the steps differ. It doesn't cover everything Assets can do; it gets you to a working first result you can build on.

You need Assets set up on your site and permission to create schemas. If you're not sure, check with whoever administers your site. To understand the terms used here - schema, object type, attribute, object - see the Assets glossary.

Choose a starting use case

Start with something small that your team already cares about, rather than trying to model everything at once. A single, real thing your team tracks - your vendors, your contracts, or your equipment - is enough to get a useful result.

The rest of this guide follows one example: tracking the vendors your team relies on. The steps are the same whatever you choose to track, so you can follow along and substitute your own.

Create a schema and object type

A schema is a workspace for a related group of things. An object type defines what each thing in it looks like - the information you want to capture about it.

  1. In Assets, create a schema for your use case - for the example, a Vendors schema.

  2. Add an object type inside it - for the example, a Vendor object type.

  3. Add the attributes you want to capture, such as an owner, a status, and a renewal date. Attributes are the details that describe each object.

Add an object

An object is a single thing of that type - one vendor, in the example.

  1. In your object type, create an object.

  2. Fill in its attributes - the owner, status, and any dates that matter.

You now have one real object you can find, update, and connect to other things.

Assets is most useful when your objects are connected to the work your team already does. Linking an object to a Jira work item means whoever picks up that work can see what it relates to without having to go and ask.

To link an object to Jira work, see Attach Assets objects to Jira work items.

Setting up in Jira? Some setup and navigation steps differ. Follow Getting started with Assets in Jira for the Jira-specific path.
