Getting started with Assets in Jira

Before you start in Jira

Assets works the same way in Jira as it does in Jira Service Management - the setup steps are identical once you open the app. You need a paid Jira plan, and to create a schema you need Assets admin access. If you only need to view or use existing objects, you do not need admin access.

Open Assets

Open the sidebar and select Assets. On a paid Jira plan it appears as an app you can open directly. You land on the For You page, which is your starting point for working with schemas and objects.

Create a first schema and object

From the navigation menu, select Schemas, then Create schema (you need admin access for this). Give the schema a name, then create the object types you need before you add or import objects. Once your object types exist, you can add objects one at a time or import them in bulk.

The full walkthrough - creating a schema, object types, attributes, and your first objects - is the same for everyone, so we keep it in one place. Follow Get started with Assets for the step-by-step detail.

To connect an object to a Jira work item, you use the Assets objects custom field. An admin creates and configures that field, then anyone editing a work item can attach objects to it. See Create an Assets object custom field.

Next steps

Once your first objects exist, you can link them to work items, search them with AQL, and manage who can see and edit them. See Get started with Assets for the shared setup detail.
