Configure default data dictionaries

Data Manager is included in all Service Collection Premium and Enterprise plans.

This task requires Data Manager admin permissions.

Data dictionaries standardise terminology from multiple data sources by comparing values against a list of normalised values.

In Data Manager, there are:

  • Default data dictionaries

  • Custom data dictionaries

This page describes Default data dictionaries.

Object classes with default attributes include:

  • Compute

    • Platform: To roll up Operating systems to a platform (eg Windows, Linux, MAC, zOS, etc).

    • OSVersion: Normalizing operating systems into a clean label (eg Windows 11)

    • InfrastructureType: Merging the manufacturer and model so they can be normalized into device types (laptops, desktops, mobile etc)

  • Network

    • IsVirtual: Identifying a virtual or physical network device.

    • InfrastructureType: Merging the manufacturer and model so they can be normalized into network device types (gateways, modems, switches, firewalls, etc)

  • Peripherals

    • DeviceType: Merging the manufacturer and model so they can be normalized into a peripheral type (monitor, keyboards, scanners, etc)

    • InfrastructureType: Enabling grouping into a peripheral grouping (eg consumables, audio visual, print / scan and other).

Create default data dictionaries

Default data dictionaries are created automatically when:

  • all default computed attributes for an object class are mapped, and

  • you add and fetch a data source and then save the mapping for the first time.

Saving the mapping triggers Data Manager to check and (if needed) download or update default data dictionaries.
