Block app access from mobile browsers

Who can do this?
Role: Organization admin
Atlassian Cloud: Atlassian Guard Standard
Atlassian Government Cloud: Not available

Access policies help you control how users access Atlassian apps in your organization. You can use an access policy to block access from mobile browsers to the following apps in your organization:

  • Jira (including Jira Product Discovery, Jira Service Management)

  • Confluence

  • Analytics

  • Compass

Mobile browser users can access Atlassian apps not included in this list.

Create a mobile browser access policy

To block access from mobile browsers:

  1. Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.

  2. Select Security > User security > Access policies.

  3. Select Create policy.

  4. Enter a name and description for the access policy, then select Create.

  5. Set the access control to Block, then select Turn on policy.

Block mobile browser experience for users

Users attempting to access Atlassian apps from a mobile browser may see this error message:

You can’t access this content because your admin applied a security policy that
blocks access to apps in this organization.

Limitations

In some cases we can’t block access from mobile browsers to Atlassian apps. For example, users will always see these information types:

  • Recent history in home.atlassian.com

  • App notification details

  • Smart Links shared in Jira or Confluence

Browser and OS restrictions

The block mobile browser control impacts desktop environments that use similar identification signatures:

  • Safari (macOS): Due to how Safari identifies itself, our system cannot distinguish between a Mac desktop and an iOS device using Request desktop site.

  • Linux desktops: Access is currently restricted because Linux desktop signatures appear identical to Android mobile browsers in Desktop mode.

  • Chrome OS (Chromebooks): Browser-based access is restricted. Chromebook users should download and use the official Jira or Confluence mobile apps available in the Google Play Store rather than accessing via a browser.
