What is the timeline view and how do I use it?
This page is for business spaces
To check whether you’re in a business or software space, select More actions (•••) next to the space name in either the header or the sidebar. At the bottom of the menu that opens, your space details will be shown.
The timeline view helps visualize the timing, duration, and dependencies of work items in your space. Easily view how long tasks take to complete and when things will land. It gives a general overview of the status of your work, making it well suited for sharing progress with leaders, stakeholders, or just within the team.
To start using the timeline, open your space and select Timeline in the space navigation. You can only use the timeline view if you are in a business space. If you still can’t see it, your admin may have removed the timeline view from your space.
How to use the timeline view
Your space’s timeline is a Gantt chart view that can be used to visualize and plan the timing and sequence of individual work items. The schedule bars on the timeline represent the start date and due date of each work item in your space. Schedule bar colors represent the status of each work item.
Hover over a horizontal line and select a work item to set a start and due date.
Move the schedule bar to adjust the start and due date of the work item or change the duration by dragging the handles of each bar.
Drag the schedule bar to reschedule a work item. If the work item has any subtasks, they’ll be moved as well.
Select the name and drag up or down to reorder the work items in your timeline
Link work items in the timeline that are contingent on others being completed first.
View which work items may be blocked due to a certain issue.
Change how much time you’re viewing with the button in the bottom right: Weeks, Months, or Quarters.
Select the Today button at the top right to go back to today’s date (which is marked with an orange vertical line).
Select Filter to filter work items on your timeline. Learn how to use filters
Use keywords from your work item summary or description to search in the timeline view. Enter the keyword and all work containing those keywords will be shown. You can also search by entering the whole work item key.
Add important key fields like assignee and status as columns on your timeline so that you track work quickly without opening each work item. These fields are now inline editable in the timeline.
How roll-up works on the timeline
On the timeline, parent items (like epics) can automatically reflect dates and progress based on their child work items.
The parent start date is the earliest start date of its child items.
The parent end date is the latest due date of its child items.
The parent’s progress reflects the statuses of its child items.
This helps you quickly see if a parent item is realistically scoped and how it’s tracking without opening each child work item.
Roll-up might not apply in some situations:
No child items: If a parent item has no child work items, its dates won’t be rolled up from anything else — you can set and adjust them manually.
Filtered timeline view: When your timeline is showing items as a flat list, roll-up can be turned off so you only see each item’s own dates.
Space with more than 10,000 work items: In very large spaces, we may turn off automatic roll-ups to help keep the timeline fast and responsive. In that case, parent items won’t automatically calculate dates from their child items
