Create and manage global fields

What is a global field?

A global field is a custom field that can only be created by a Jira admin and is reused across multiple projects and products. This field type is updated from a single place, and properties such as name, description, options, and formatting are the same when shared across all projects.

Create a new global field

Before you begin

  • People, custom formulas, and vote fields are not supported as global custom fields.

Steps

  1. Go to the top bar and select > Products.

  2. Under Jira Product Discovery, select Global fields.

  3. Click Create global field, select the type of field you want to create, and click Create.

  4. Add the details for your field and click Add to a project.

  5. Select which Jira Product Discovery projects you want this field to be available in.

Configure global fields

Before you begin

  • Unlike project custom fields, global fields can only be edited from the Global Fields page.

  • Ensure you go check out the Field information before making changes.

Adding context to a global field will make it unavailable in Jira Product Discovery, as contexts are meant to restrict fields to specific company-managed projects.

Edit a global field

  1. Go to the top bar and select > Products.

  2. Under Jira Product Discovery, select Global fields.

  3. Choose the field you want to edit, click and make the changes.

Delete a global field

Deleting a global field will impact all projects and views it uses, and all stored data will be lost. This can have significant consequences on visualizations in Jira Product Discovery. Make sure you contact the different project admins before doing so.

Steps

  1. Go to the top bar and select > Products.

  2. Under Jira Product Discovery, select Global fields.

  3. Select a field and click the next to it.

  4. Click Delete.

  5. Confirm deletion.

Change formatting of existing fields

You can reuse supported Jira custom fields in Jira Product Discovery projects. From this page, you can edit and format field values.

Before you begin

  • Ensure you check out the Field information before making changes. Formatting options such as emojis and colors won’t be visible in other Jira products; however, changing the name or options will be reflected in other Jira projects.

Migrate values from a project field to a global field

To replace an existing project field with a new global field, you can copy its values into the new global field. When copying a project field value, the different values added to a field will be copied into the new global field across all ideas for this project.

Before you begin

  • You must be a project admin to copy field values to global fields.

  • You can copy values between two fields of the same type.

  • The global field needs to be added to the project.

Steps

  1. In your discovery project, go to Project settings > Fields.

  2. Select an existing project field and click , or create a new field.

  3. Once you've selected the field you want to copy into a global field, go to the bottom of the field panel and click Copy values.

  4. Select the global field where you want to copy the values or create a new one, and then click Copy values. You can now see values under the global field for all ideas under this project.

Tip
Once you have copied values and your global field has been populated, you can replace your project field with the global field in your views. You can then eventually retire the project field to avoid confusion.
