Usage charges and billing
For some of your subscriptions, you only have a cost per user/user tier. For others, you have a cost per user as well as costs related to usage. For those subscriptions that have both, you’ll have quota types with certain usage amounts that you’ll be charged extra for if you go over.
This means you’re charged based on the amount of each quota type you use, rather than just your subscription price per user. As part of your subscription, you receive a set amount of each quota type. We call this your included quantity.
Your bill (invoice) is made up of the cost per user, plus any extra usage charges. If you use anything over your included quantity, extra usage charges are added to your next invoice.
The following Atlassian apps and add-ons include billable items based on usage:
Atlassian Bitbucket
Jira Service Management Assets and Virtual Agents
What’s a quota type?
It’s a particular offering or service included in a subscription. As part of your subscription, you’ll receive a pre-defined amount, or included quantity, of each applicable quota type — which you can use without being charged extra. For example, Atlassian Bitbucket subscriptions include git LFS (Large File Storage) and build minutes.
The quota types included in each subscription vary from app to app, and the included quantity for each quota type depends on what plan you’re on.
What happens when I use more than my included quantity?
If you’re on a Standard or Premium plan and you go over the included quantity for any of your quota types, extra charges will be added to your next invoice, at the end of the billing period. Organization and billing admins can view usage, a breakdown of any extra charges, and the next bill estimate on the subscription details page from their site’s Administration. If you’re on a Free plan, you can only use up to the included quantity for your subscription. If you want to use extra, you’ll need to upgrade your plan.
Billing example
As an example, you have an Atlassian Bitbucket Standard subscription with 15 users priced at USD 5 per user, per month. Included in your subscription is 5 GB of Git LFS storage. A couple of weeks into your billing cycle, you use up your included quantity of Git LFS storage and use an extra 50 GB. A week later, you use another 50 GB.
Extra storage usage is priced, for example, at USD 10 per additional 100 GB per month. Your next bill estimate will be:
Your base Standard subscription charge: USD 75
Your total extra usage charges: USD 10
Your total bill estimate: USD 85
