Get started with Loom for MacOS
Using a version of MacOS older than 15 (Sequoia)? Download the previous version of Loom for MacOS.
The new version of the Loom for MacOS desktop app supports capturing and sharing video, audio, and screenshots for explaining ideas, demonstrating products, documenting bugs, and keeping teams aligned.
Capture your screen and camera: Record your full screen, a window, a browser tab, a selected area, your camera, or the screen and camera together.
Record audio and video: Capture microphone, camera, and system audio. On eligible plans and devices, you can record at up to 4K resolution.
Customize your recording: Choose the camera bubble shape and apply a filter to your image. Move the bubble around your screen, snapping to the corners and edges. You can also choose from our provided virtual backgrounds, upload your own background, or select a background color.
Present your content clearly: Hide desktop icons and the menu bar. Include custom backgrounds, drawing annotations, and mouse-click highlights.
Capture screenshots: Take, share, and annotate screenshots.
Speaker notes: Create notes and view them while you record to stay on track.
Save and share content: Choose the workspace where recordings are saved, then share videos and screenshots through Loom and supported integrations.
Use Loom for MacOS
After you install Loom for MacOS, you can launch it from the Menu Bar or the Dock.
Launching Loom
In the Menu Bar, you can select the Loom icon to see quick actions to jump right into recording, recording for an agent, screenshots, or your video library. Select a quick action to open Loom with everything setup to complete that action.

Loom opens with its two main interfaces visible: the toolbar and your camera window.
The Loom toolbar
You control Loom with the toolbar. It’s hidden while you’re recording or taking a screenshot.
Select X to close Loom.
Choose your capture mode:
Record display captures your entire monitor.
Record window captures a specific app window.
Record custom size lets you drag your cursor to capture a specific part of your screen.
Record camera only records fullscreen video of your camera.
Select your Mac’s camera, an external camera, or no camera.
Select your Mac’s microphone, an external mic, or no mic.
You’ll see a small waveform indicator behind the microphone icon. It turns red when you’re speaking too loudly.
Select More actions (…) to see additional options:
Select Speaker notes to open a window where you can input your own notes.
You can type or dictate your notes.
Notes aren’t visible to the viewers when you record.
Select Play to scroll your notes as you record. You can set the playback speed.
Select Backgrounds to temporarily change your background image. This is useful to provide a neutral background while recording.
Select one of Loom’s preset background patterns.
Use the eyedropper tool to select a color.
Select an image file saved on your computer.
Select Recording settings:
Show recording countdown shows a quick countdown before you record.
Hide system UI removes the MacOS menu bar, dock, and your desktop widgets from the final recording.
Highlight mouse clicks adds a quick yellow indicator whenever you click your screen.
Includ systems audio will record your Mac’s audio output. Use this to include music in a Loom recording.
Resolution includes 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4k (2160p).
Not all recording resolutions are available on all plans.
Select All settings to open the full settings menu.
Use the Lock icon to set your video recording to private.
Select Record for agent to create a video that will become an AI prompt.
When the recording starts, you can show areas of the screen and talk through what your want done.
Loom pulls in screenshots and context automatically.
Select Record when you’re ready to begin.
Your camera bubble
In recording mode, when you have your camera selected, you can drag your camera window anywhere on your screen. It will “snap” into place in the corners and sides of the screen. Loom remembers where you placed the camera next time you open it.
Hover over the camera bubble to show settings:
Use the slider to choose from five bubble sizes.
Select Camera settings to open the full settings menu, including changing cameras, filters (None, Vivid, Mono, Chrome, Warm, Vibey, and Rainbow).
Pro-tip: Cmd-click your image to cycle through the filters.
Select a bubble shape:
Squircle (a rounded square)

Turn camera off to hide your camera from the recording.
Record a video
Set your options in the Loom toolbar and camera window, open the app or content you want to demonstrate, and select Record.
When you finish recording, select Stop. A thumbnail preview of the video displays at the bottom left of your screen. Select it to see options.
Select X to dismiss the window.
Select the Lock icon to make the video private or public.
Select Open to open the video in a browser window in View mode.
Select Preview to open the video in a local preview window.
Select Copy Link to add the video’s web address to your clipboard. You can then paste it for sharing.
Select More, then Edit to open the video in a browser window in Edit mode or Delete to permanently delete the video from your Loom workspace.
Manage meetings
The Menu Bar can also include optional separate controls for meetings (select this in Settings). If you use Loom for meetings and have linked your calendar, you will see a countdown to your next meeting.
Select the meeting title to see a dropdown of upcoming meetings, recent meetings, and the option to record your current meeting with Loom.
The meetings menu only shows calendar appointments that include meeting links from your video meeting application (such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams). Other calendar items won’t appear here.

In the Loom toolbar, select the Recording settings (cog icon), then All Settings to see the full settings window.
If you’re on a Free plan, select Upgrade to see what features are included in paid plans (such as 4K video).
In the General tab, you can:
Turn on the sounds that play after a recording or a screenshot.
Set your preferred action after you record a video or take a screenshot.
Open Link opens the video or image in a browser.
Copy Link copies the web address of your video or image to your clipboard.
Copy Image copies the screenshot to your clipboard.
Do Nothing shows the preview at the bottom of your screen without opening a browser.
Set your Meetings interface.
Turn on the separate item in the menu bar for meetings.
Notify you of upcoming meetings.
Change App options.
Choose light mode, dark mode, or follow your system settings.
Show or hide Loom in the Dock.
Show the Loom controls when you use Command-Tab to switch to Loom.
Set Loom to launch automatically when you log in.
Automatically install updates.
In the Shortcuts tab, you can see the currently set shortcuts or set your own custom shortcuts.
In the Account tab, you can see your account and organization settings and select a default workspace and default privacy options for new recordings. You can also Sign Out of Loom.
In the About tab you can see details about the app, contact Loom Support, and Check for Updates.
