We’re renaming ‘products’ to ‘apps’

Atlassian 'products’ are now ‘apps’. You may see both terms used across our documentation as we roll out this terminology change. Here’s why we’re making this change

What are managed accounts?

A managed account is an Atlassian account your organization has full administrative control of. You can update their account details and deactivate or delete their account if needed. To manage an Atlassian account, you have to verify the email domain to prove you own it and claim the account. Verify a domain to manage accounts

If you don’t claim an account from a verified domain, we consider this account an external user to your organization.

An external user in Atlassian is someone whose Atlassian account isn’t managed by your organization. As an admin, you can invite them to your apps and remove them when they no longer need access, but you can’t update their account details or delete their account completely. This is because you don’t manage their account. An example of a external user is a contractor working with your company temporarily.

Example

We use a fictional organization, Acme, to illustrate all possible scenarios.

External user

The Acme organization has verified they own the domain acme.com. Any accounts they claim from acme.com are their managed accounts. They claimed Liam’s account, so Liam is a managed account.

Acme hasn’t claimed Jane’s acme.com account, so she’s considered an external user. This is because to manage an account, you must verify the email domain and claim the account.

When Jane uses her personal email to log in to the Acme organization, she’s an external user because Acme doesn’t own her personal email domain.

View managed accounts

To view your organization’s managed accounts:

  1. Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.

  2. Select Directory > Managed accounts.

You can automate this process with the Get managed accounts in an organization API.

Email address verification

If a managed account hasn’t verified their email address, you’re unable to make changes to their account. You can resend a verification email to a managed account. How to resend a verification email
