Take, edit and share a screenshot

With screenshots on Loom, you can easily capture, edit, and share images with the rest of your team and beyond. Just as we create instant URLs for each video you record on Loom, we create shareable URLs for each screenshot you take on Loom as well.

Each screenshot you take in Loom lives in the Screenshot tab of your Loom Library for easy access.

Capture a screenshot

To take a screenshot you must have the Loom Desktop app or Chrome Extension installed.

You have two ways to capture a screenshot:

Option 1: Use your pre-recording menu

When you open the Loom Desktop app or Chrome Extension, select the Screenshot tab. Pick between Custom area or Full-screen. When taking a custom screenshot you will then be able to drag and select the part of your screen you want to capture.

Option 2: Use your keyboard shortcuts

Loom offers the ability to override your macOS screenshot shortcuts, allowing you to streamline your workflow by leveraging familiar shortcuts.

To set up Loom’s screenshot shortcuts to override MacOS defaults:

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac and navigate to Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts.

  2. Go to Screenshots.

  3. Uncheck all existing shortcut options to disable macOS default screenshot functionality.

  4. Launch the Loom Desktop App and select the three-dot menu () in the bottom right corner.

  5. Go to Settings and then select Preferences.

  6. Assign ⌘ Shift 3 and ⌘ Shift 4 (macOS default screenshot shortcuts) as your shortcuts for Loom Desktop screenshots.

Once set up, these shortcuts will allow you to take screenshots seamlessly with Loom.

Screenshot shortcuts are exclusively available when using the Loom Desktop App. Explore more about our pre-configured shortcuts.

Editing a screenshot

You have several annotation tools available to highlight specific details within your screenshots. To access these tools, select Edit Image, located in the upper-right corner of the Screenshot page. Alternatively, use the editing option available in the preview modal that appears immediately after taking a screenshot with the Desktop App.

  • Text annotations: Select the "Tt" icon to start typing. Your text will appear immediately, and you can reposition it by clicking and dragging. To change the color, select the desired color from the color swatch.

  • Rectangles: Rectangles are perfect for highlighting specific parts of an image. Select the rectangle icon in the tools panel, then click and drag to create the desired shape. You can also change the color using the color swatch.

  • Arrows: Arrows are great for drawing attention to particular details in any image. To get started, select the arrow icon and drag to create an arrow. The arrow will automatically shape itself in the direction you drag.

  • Crop: Screenshot cropping allows you to easily edit and refine your captured images with ease.

  • Blur: Easily blur out sensitive information in your screenshots while keeping your image clear and polished.

All annotations/edits can be repositioned. After placing an annotation on your screenshot, you can select and drag it to move it or adjust the points on the ends to reshape it.

You can also modify the color of any annotation, by selecting the color swatch in the tool panel and selecting your preferred color. You can do this either before you place the shape, or after it is already on the screenshot.

Once you're happy with your edits select Finish in the top right corner.

Share a screenshot

After capturing a screenshot, Loom automatically copies the link to your clipboard, allowing you to share it seamlessly with your audience, just like sharing a Loom video.

Here are some ways to share your screenshot:

  • Copy and paste: If you plan on taking screenshots from Loom and using them in other applications, the standard copy-and-paste functions work as expected for moving images without saving. When using the Desktop app, you'll have the option to copy directly from the preview modal that appears immediately after taking a screenshot.

  • Unfurl: Paste the link into the desired application (Slack, Confluence...), where your screenshot will expand into a preview for easy viewing.

  • Download: Save the screenshot to your device, then upload it to any platform or location of your choice.

Screenshot auto-titles

Loom AI automatically generates a title for your screenshots based on the content of your image. Auto-titles make it easier to find old screenshots and add even more rich context for your recipient. Auto-titles for screenshots are available to everyone (you don't need to be on a Business+ AI plan).

After you finish taking a screenshot, an title will automatically be added. You can edit or remove the title from the share page or desktop preview.

Recipients can see the screenshot title when you share with a link, drag and drop, or embed the screenshot.

Privacy settings

You can update the privacy settings for your screenshot directly from the screenshot page. Simply select the button next to the Copy Link button to make your changes. Read more about Loom’s privacy settings.

FAQ

Why can I no longer edit my annotations after I crop a screenshot?

Our current screenshot cropping feature replaces the original image with the cropped version, which means you'll no longer be able to edit previously added annotations. For example, if you add an arrow to Image A and then crop it, you won't be able to edit that arrow when you return to edit mode.

Can I undo a crop once applied?

Unfortunately, once you crop the image and it replaces the original, the action cannot be undone, and the previous version cannot be restored.

Can I turn off auto-titles for screenshots?

You can turn screenshots auto-titles by following the steps below.

  1. Visit your videos and go to the Settings tab on the right-hand side.

  2. Then select Set defaults.

  3. From here you can toggle off Auto titles for video & screenshots.

Why don’t I see auto-titles applied to my screenshots?

If the admin of your workspace has turned Loom AI off then you will not see auto-titles applied. If you would like to get auto-titles applied, you will need to work with admin of your workspace.

I don’t have a Loom Business+AI plan will I still get auto-titles on Loom screenshots?

Loom Screenshots auto-titles are available on all plans.
