Get started with the Loom Chrome extension

How to record using Loom's Chrome extension

This video shows recording with Loom’s Chrome extension, including choosing capture options, editing, setting privacy, and sharing your finished video.

Recording a video has never been so simple.

It's time for your first video recording. We put together this quick video to help you get started with Loom on Day 1.

How to start recording

  1. You can start recording by selecting the Loom Chrome extension.

  2. From here, you can decide what part of your screen you want to capture: Full Screen, Window, or Current Tab. You can choose Camera only if you don't want to record any of your screens.

    • If you record in Camera only mode, you will see a small camera bubble while recording, but don't worry, your finally recording will only capture your camera stream.

  3. Choose if you want to record your Screen and Camera by toggling your Camera on or off.

  4. Select a microphone source or turn off your microphone. You will also see an audio indicator capturing audio before you start recording. This helps ensure sound in your recordings.

  5. To remove recording controls or adjust for low light, visit your Setting under the three dots '...' at the top of your recording menu.

  6. Once you're satisfied with your recording settings, go ahead and select Start Recording.

    • Your recording settings will automatically default to those you had set previously.

Chrome extension limitations

  • Certain features are only available when recording with the Loom Desktop app. Features availability will also depend on your Loom plan (EducationBusiness, Business + AI and Enterprise).

  • You can't record your camera bubble on PDF documents within Chrome.

  • You can't record your camera bubble when you are recording a different application other than the Chrome browser.

For this reason, we suggest having both the Chrome Extension and Desktop app installed.

FAQ

  • Why is there a pinned tab when I try to record? The pinned tab is a requirement of the new Manifest Version 3 architecture. It’s a requirement from Google. You can safely ignore it - it will go away when you’re done recording.

  • Where can I change my settings? To navigate to Setting, select the "..." on the top right corner of your recorder, and you'll see the option for Settings. Within your settings, you can adjust Auto lightingFlip CameraRemove the recording countdown, and recording time display (the settings chosen will remain as the default unless changed).

  • Can I remove my Recording Menu? Select "..." on the top right corner of your recorder, and you'll see the option for Settings. From here you should see the option to disable your recording menu.
